Biography
A Classical Rock inspired trio who entranced club audiences in both New Orleans and New York for a number of years, the band was instantly recognizable by Randy Jackson's falsetto vocal style. ZEBRA eventually gained a deal with Atlantic Records, no doubt helped by manager Mark Puma's association with the Atlantic signed TWISTED SISTER. MTV helped the first album to take off thanks to repeated exposure of 'Tell Me What You Want'. A good proportion of the songs on the band's Jack Douglas produced debut actually dated back to 1978.
Douglas was also at the helm of second album 'No Tellin' Lies', which found bassist Felix Hanemann singing lead vocals on 'Little Things'. Jackson and the band self-produced the '3.V' album, a record considered to be the trio's strongest. ZEBRA bowed out with a live epitaph. Although recorded at the Sundance club in Bayshore, Long Island the audience reaction gives the impression the band were playing an arena!
Following the break up of the group Randy Jackson formed CHINA RAIN and recorded an album's worth of material for Atlantic that would experience serious delays in being made available. It eventually surfaced in 1992. Hanneman featured on the 1991 BURNING STARR album 'A Minor Disturbance'. 1989 found Jackson as part of the reformed JEFFERSON AIRPLANE line up cutting an eponymous album.
As the group reformed for a number of reunion shows during 1997 the band eventually made plans to record a brand new studio album titled 'Zebra 4'. During 1998 Mayhem Records were also set to either re-issue the ZEBRA back catalogue on CD or else put out a 'Best Of' compilation. Live work that year found Mike Sorrentino manning the drums. Meantime, Felix Hanemann cut a solo album simply credited to FELIX and entitled 'Rock Candy', recorded at Courtesy Studios in West Hempstead during October of 1998. Co-produced by Bruce Zwelsky this record featured his ZEBRA colleagues Randy Jackson, Guy Gelso and Mike Sorrentino.
Jackson joined AOR supergroup THE SIGN for the 2000 album 'Signs Of Life'. In 2001 an exclusive live take of 'As I Said Before' formed part of the WDHA radio compilation album 'The Tour Bus- Road Trip'. ZEBRA marked a return to action with album number four in 2003. Released by the Italian Frontiers label this latest outing came some seventeen years after '3.V'. Randy Jackson vocalised on the tracks 'A Farewell To Kings' and 'Subdivisions' for the Magna Carta 2005 RUSH tribute album 'Subdivisions'.
