Biography
Ashland, Kentucky Hard Rock act HYDROGYN was manifested during February of 2004, evolving from the antecedent WESTLAKE band, this unit seeing singer Julie Westlake alongside guitarists Terry Withrow and Jeff Westlake, bassist Jason Fields and drummer Greg Radcliff. Jeff Westlake's previous outfits included EQUUS, TITAN, STEAL CROSS, QUAGMIRE, INTENT and LUCID. Fields is a scene veteran of TEASER, SOUTHERN JUSTICE, AUNT BUNNY, TANTRUM and THE COMMON GROUND.
WESTLAKE folded in late 2003 with Westlake, guitarist Jeff Boggs, previously with WESTWIND, EREBUS, THE WARLORDS, ALLIES, STRUTTER, AXIS PROJECT and SILENT RAGE and ex-JEZABEL, BLIND GYPSY, CONVERTIBLE BLONDES and SHIFTER drummer Jerry Lawson working up demos with singer Jason Mays in November. This unit, adding Julie Westlake and Jason Fields, then evolved into HYDROGYN for the album 'Best Served With Volume'.
The band signed to the Desert Rock Promotions management company in early 2005. In the Summer the group commenced work on a debut album, given a working title of 'Bombshell', with veteran record producer Michael Wagener. First single, a cover version of SKID ROW's '18 & Life', was issued to radio in March 2006. Initial copies of 'Bombshell' featured 'Back In Black', the AC/DC tune, but once '18 & Life' began to hit radio the second pressing replaced this song with the SKID ROW cover. Josh Kitchen stepped in as new drummer in August.
On November 18th the band was set to appear at the Monterrey Metal Fest event at the at the Coca Cola Auditorium in Mexico alongside BLIND GUARDIAN, CATHEDRAL, U.D.O., EDGUY, OBITUARY, DEICIDE, LEAVES' EYES, SADUS, VAINGLORY, BLUDGEON and JOE STUMP'S REIGN OF TERROR. However, the group withdrew just beforehand citing "sudden medical issues" with Julie Westlake.
As 2007 broke the band announced they were switching from Chavis Records to DA Records. HYDROGYN announced a UK club tour commencing 23rd February at The Tavern, Wigan. French shows followed in March. A Julie Westlake calendar was also proposed for issue that same month. Also arriving would be a Destroy All Records Entertainment digital download release entitled 'Live Explosion', compiling concert recordings captured during their summer 2006 shows in Charleston; Huntington, West Virginia and Dayton, Ohio.
HYDROGYN's next album, 'Deadly Passions', was recorded in Huntington, West Virginia's Smash Hits Studio and included a cover of ALANIS MORISSETTE's hit 'You Oughta Know'. In July 2008 the group announced they had signed to UK label Demolition Records.
New drummer Josh Cumberland, from ERASE THE GREY, was enrolled in November.
