Biography

Solo album by journeyman Death Metal guitarist. James Murphy's credits include AGENT STEEL, DEATH's 'Spiritual Healing' and OBITUARY's 'Cause Of Death' in 1990, sessions with British Deathsters CANCER, DISINCARNATE during 1993 and two albums with TESTAMENT 'Low' and 'Live At The Fillmore'.

Murphy's debut solo effort in 1996 'Convergence' has guests Chuck Billy of TESTAMENT, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD's Devin Townsend and NAJI'S KITCHEN's Eddii Ellis. Drums were on supply from Deen Castronovo, a veteran of Metal bands CACOPHONY and WILD DOGS.

The 1999 album 'Feeding The Machine' sees valuable guest contributions from GEEZER vocalist Clark Brown, ARTENSION's Vitalij Kuprij, Chuck Billy and drummer Deen Castronova once again.

1999 found Murphy recording with Danes KONKHRA and acting as producer for Californian Thrashers DEKAPITATOR's debut 'We Will Destroy, ...You Will Obey' album. By 2000 Murphy was once again a member of TESTAMENT and had also resurrected DISINCARNATEworking with vocalist Tomas Lindberg of THE CROWN and AT THE GATES.

However, in September of 2001 the guitarist went public with the news that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumour. The first signs of the condition: a neurologically effecting pituitary macro-adenoma - a growth which causes pressure on the brain, caused him to develop poor judgment, memory, and vision. As Murphy's conditioned worsened he lost his position as a member of TESTAMENT, became estranged from friends and family and lost his recording studio and gear. The operation to remove the large tumour was drastic with surgeons having to cut open the guitarist's in order to access and remove the tumor.

Work on various projects was put on hold whilst Murphy recuperated from surgery as various Metal bands arranged benefit concerts in an attempt to raise the medical fees. It would seem that by Spring of 2002 Murphy, although still receiving treatment, had recuperated enough to act as producer for the recording of a new album from Michigan's SUMMON 'The Blood Runs Black'.

As 2003 drew in Murphy announced plans for a DEATH tribute album involving ex-MALEVOLENT CREATION vocalist Brett Hoffmann, ex-MALEVOLENT CREATION and SUFFOCATION drummer Dave Culross and CKY guitarist Deron Miller. The guitarist gained mastering credits on the Arlington Heights, Illinois Death Metal act ENFORSAKEN's February 2004 opus 'The Forever Endeavor', also contributing a guitar solo to the track 'All For Nothing'. March and April found Murphy acting as engineer for SINGLE BULLET THEORY's ''Behind Eyes Of Hatred' album.

In August Murphy revealed he had joined "neo-technical Death Metal" band FOREIGN OBJECTS, formed by CKY members guitarist Deron Miller and drummer Jess Margera. The guitarist also made time to contribute a guest guitar solo to 2004 recording's from FIREWIND.

A further benefit gig for Murphy would be held at the The Token Lounge, Westland, Michigan during September. Dubbed the 'International Metalfest' the event saw such bands as AVERNUS, ALETHEIAN, LUCIFER'S HAMMER, VESPERIAN SORROW, ENFORSAKEN, DROGHEDA, WITHERING SOUL and Poland's DEMISE donating their services.

The early months of 2005 found Murphy at Andy Sneap's Backstage Studios in Derbyshire, UK, aiding with recording of Martin Walkyier's THE CLAN DESTINED project EP. March 2006 found Murphy behind the desk as producer for Phoenix, Arizona Metalcore outfit ABIGAIL WILLIAMS.
