PELICAN

Biography

Evanstown, Illinois fully instrumental Drone outfit. The founding PELICAN trio of guitarists Laurent Lebec and Trevor de Brauw alongside drummer Larry Herweg have their roots entrenched in the Grind act TUSK. Herweg also operates Doom act LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR, forged by former 7000 DYING RATS musicians guitarist Steven Rathbone and bassist Donald James Barraca.

An opening four track 'Untitled' EP scored both acclaim on the international Doom circuit and a recording contract with the Hydra Head label. PELICAN then united with fellow Hydra Head and Tortuga artists HARKONEN, SCISSORFIGHT, OLD MAN GLOOM, THE AUSTERITY PROGRAM and 5IVE for the North American 'Champions Of Sound' tour.

The 'Australasia' album emerged in November of 2003. Split releases shared with FLOOR and GROWING were projected for 2004. The band put in a West Coast tour prior to recording two new songs at Electrical Audio Studios. A brief bust of further US shows preceded European dates, these including UK shows in August partnered with ex-GODFLESH frontman Justin Broadrick's new outfit JESU.

A 2005 EP comprised a twenty minute track entitled 'March Into The Sea' and a Justin Broadrick remix of 'Angel Tears'. A split release shared with MONO would also be projected. US dates in October found PELICAN as support to OPETH and FIREBALL MINISTRY. Throughout February and into April 2006 the band joined the 'Taste Of Chaos' US and Canadian festival tour alongside a mammoth billing comprising DEFTONES, ATREYU, AS I LAY DYING, STORY OF THE YEAR, DREDG, SILVERSTEIN, FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND, THRICE, , THE RECEIVING END OF SIRENS, THE CONFESSION, ADAIR, STREET DRUM CORPS, GREELEY ESTATES, MILLIONAIRE and THE SMASHUP. In September the band toured with DAUGHTERS and even Black Metal band NACHTMYSTIUM.

PELICAN utilised Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago with engineer Andrew Schneider during December 2006 to track a new album.

The group utilised Red Room studios in Seattle, Washington in February 2009, recording an EP as the band's first release on Southern Lord. In March, PELICAN will played a number of shows alongside new labelmates WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM.

The group's fourth full-length studio album, 'What We All Come To Need', was completed in early August 2009. Studio guests included Helms Alee and Allen Epley, from THE LIFE & THE TIMES, Greg Anderson of SUNNO))), Aaron Turner of ISIS, Ben Verellen of HARKONEN.
