Biography
Chicago Nu-Metal band founded by erstwhile VANDAL members guitarist Don Donegan and bassist Fuzz. DISTURBED's heady rise to fame has been impressive. The act's debut demo session would secure a deal with the Giant imprint of Warner Bros. for their March 2000 'Sickness' album. The album received increased media exposure due to the inclusion of a novelly twisted version of the TEARS FOR FEARS hit 'Shout'.
2001 began badly for bassist Fuzz after he fell down a fire escape at the band's rehearsal complex in Chicago shattering his ankle. The band filled in for some European dates with MARILYN MANSON by utilising KILGORE and METHODS OF MAYHEM man Marty O'Brein as substitute.
Later American touring into the year found DISTURBED added to the summer 'Ozzfest' dates. The band's burgeoning popularity was amply illustrated when crowd response at initial gigs forced the organisers to elevate the band through the rankings to act as the main support to headliners BLACK SABBATH. DISTURBED's live take of 'Fear' would feature on the subsequent 'Ozzfest 2001' album.
The band set out on their own run of headline shows dubbed the 'Music As A Weapon' tour. Commencing on September 22nd in Colorado DISTURBED topped a strong billing comprising of DROWNING POOL, ADEMA, STEREOMUD and SYSTEMATIC. The band then hooked up with KORN's ''Pop Sux!' tour commencing at the Manchester, NH, Verizon Wireless Arena on October 8th.
Selling in excess of 283,000 copies in its first week of release the 'Believe' album debuted impressively at the no. 1 spot on the Billboard album charts. Shortly after the band's debut 'The Sickness' was certified with triple platinum status. Bassist Fuzz departed that November and by April of 2004 rumours were suggesting that erstwhile THE UNION UNDERGROUND man John Moyer had secured the position. Indeed, the band debuted Moyer at a Chicago House Of Blues gig in July, also airing new songs 'Hell' and 'Monster' for the first time.
On the 23rd February 2005, DISTURBED, alongside ANTHRAX, SOIL and DROWNING POOL, featured in a special show at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom was organised to cover bereavement costs for the family of DAMAGEPLAN security guard Jeffrey "Mayhem" Thompson and medical expenses for injured DAMAGEPLAN crew members John "Kat" Brooks and Chris Paluska. DISTURBED, bringing Vinnie Paul on to perform drums, covered PANTERA's 'Walk' in their set.
A new DISTURBED album, '10,000 Fists' set for September issue, would be preceded by the 'Guarded' single, launched to radio in mid June. Fan club editions of the album included two exclusive tracks. A successive UK single, 'Stricken', added previously unavailable studio tracks 'Hell' and 'Dehumanized'. The '10,000 Fists' album went straight to no. 1 in the USA, selling over 238,000 copies in its first week of sale.
On 5th August David Draiman turned up onstage at the Hollywood House Of Blues as guests to DAVE NAVARRO's jam band CAMP FREDDY, performing a rendition of LED ZEPPELIN's 'Whole Lotta Love alongside JERRY CANTRELL and VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash. US gigs throughout August and September saw ILL NINO and 10 YEARS as support. October UK gigs would be cancelled when David Draiman was diagnosed with a severe inflammation of the vocal chords due to a recurring severe acid reflux problem. In November DISTURBED hooked up with CORROSION OF CONFORMITY for a national Jägermeister sponsored US tour. A variety of opening acts would be employed including SOIL, THE HEAVILS, DRY KILL LOGIC, DOPE, OPIATE FOR THE MASSES, FIREBALL MINISTRY and DOG FASHION DISCO. As this tour rolled into 2006, BLOODSIMPLE picked up the support. European and UK dates, set to commence at the Nurnberg Löwensaal, Germany on 9th March and closing with a date at London's Astoria on 3rd April, saw Seattle Heavy Metal band NEVERMORE announced as support. However, these gigs were then postponed. In April the group toured Australia, making up a bill comprising HATEBREED, 10 YEARS and KORN. Back on US soil, the band once more hit the road in June with FIREBALL MINISTRY as openers.
'Ozzfest' once again loomed for the 2006 summer touring season, the group sharing the festival stages with OZZY OSBOURNE, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, HATEBREED, LACUNA COIL, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, ATREYU, UNEARTH, BLEEDING THROUGH, NORMA JEAN, A LIFE ONCE LOST, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, THE RED CHORD, FULL BLOWN CHAOS, WALLS OF JERICHO, ALL THAT REMAINS and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME.
The group headed up the US 'Music As A Weapon' dates commencing November 15th in Providence, Rhode Island and concluding on December 22nd in Madison, Wisconsin, backed by STONE SOUR, FLYLEAF and NONPOINT.
DISTURBED's June 2008, 'Indestructible', sold 253,000 copies in the United States during its first week of release to debut at no. 1 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band hit the US touring circuit again kicking off on 9th July at the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, Washington as part of the 'Rockstar Energy Mayhem' tour billed alongside DRAGONFORCE, SLIPKNOT, UNDEROATH, WALLS OF JERICHO, MACHINE HEAD, SUICIDE SILENCE, THE RED CHORD, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, 36 CRAZYFISTS, AIRBOURNE, BLACK TIDE and MASTODON through into late August.
