Biography
Discovered playing the bars and clubs of Georgia and beyond as NATIVE in 1988, Arista Records signed the band and sent them, newly named as WITNESS, to San Francisco as a band in the midst of huge line-up changes. A critically acclaimed, female fronted outfit, WITNESS' debut album was more the result of sterling work by session players than the band itself. By the time the record (cut in San Francisco) was finished JOURNEY men Steve Smith and NEAL SCHON, NIGHT RANGER guitarist BRAD GILLIS, 38 SPECIAL man Danny Chauncey and session veteran Tim Pierce had all contributed in some shape or form. Although credited on the sleeve, neither guitarist Damon Johnson, having earlier performed with RENEGADE, HEADLINE and SPLIT THE DARK, nor bassist Eddie Usher played on the record.
The record included the Michael Bolton / Martin Briley co-written 'Am I Wrong' and co-writes with Neal Schon on 'Borrowed Time' and 'Back To You'. Damon Johnson exited to form CHINATOWN, DELTA REBELS and later formed the high profile BROTHER CANE, taking up the role of vocalist. WITNESS keyboard player Joey Huffman also featured in the BROTHER CANE history, on the 'Seeds' album, and also worked with MATCHBOX 20 and SOUL ASYLUM. Debbie Davis provided live back up vocals for LYNYRD SKYNYRD during 1994.
Munich based label Yesterrock re-issued the album on CD in 2009.
