Biography
Exponants of classic, Southern styled Hard Rock, Macon, Georgia's DOC HOLLIDAY garnered laudable press attention and a loyal fan base with their brand of Boogie. However, later in their career the band shifted towards distinctly more AOR territory. DOC HOLLIDAY was founded in 1980 by former ROUNDHOUSE vocalist / guitarist Bruce Brookshire, guitarist Ric Skelton, keyboard player Eddie Stone and drummer Robert Liggio. The band's debut Tom Allom produced record, backed by a support tour to THE OUTLAWS, scored high on the Billboard charts, reaching no.30 and sophomore outing 'Doc Holliday Rides Again', this time seeing production credits going to David Anderle, also sold strongly. By 1981 Leggio had departed in favour of Herman Nixon. Live work found the band on the road in North America supporting BLACK SABBATH's 'Mob Rules' tour. The following year saw increased road work alongside LOVERBOY and APRIL WINE.
To the horror of some and the delight of others, DOC HOLLIDAY experimented greatly with their 'Modern Medicine' album of 1983 vintage by engaging producer Mack to work on the record in Munich, Germany. Reaction to the album was so adverse it triggered a split in the band during 1984. However, they would soon reunite, although DOC HOLLIDAY's 'Danger Zone' album saw the departure of drummer Herman Nixon. His position was filled by Jamie Deckart.
The 1989 concert album 'Song For The Outlaw Live' saw a completely new look for the band. Based around lynchpin vocalist / guitarist Bruce Brookshire DOC HOLLIDAY now comprised of guitarist Billy Yates together with a new rhythm section of bassist Daniel Bud Ford and drummer John Vaughn.
1993's 'Son Of The Morning Star' record witnessed a DOC HOLLIDAY recording line up comprising Brookshire, guitarist John Turner Samuelson, bass player Daniel Bud Ford with Danny "Cadillac" Lastinger on the drums. Special editions of the album added two live acoustic numbers 'Keep On Running' and 'Rebel Girl'. It would be promoted across Europe and Scandinavia by dates in partnership with UFO and QUIET RIOT. Brookshire also appeared as part of BORDERLINE on the 1995 album 'Line Up'. DOC HOLLIDAY would be back in action during 1996, the 'Legacy' album hosting new material alongside re-recorded archive tracks. Bruce Brookshire struck out on the solo trail for gigs in 1997. Longstanding fans of the band received a further treat that year when the original line up reunited for a reunion concert in Macon.
DOC HOLLIDAY contributed their version of 'Jailbreak' to the 2000 PHIL LYNOTT tribute album 'Spirit Of The Black Rose'. The year would prove an industrious one for the band, taking in German headline shows with guests LIZARD. August 2001 re-releases of both 'Dangerzone' and 'Song For The Outlaw - Live' preceded a new album that October, 'A Better Road', promoted by a further trek across Germany. That same year BRUCE BROOKSHIRE released his acoustic solo album 'The Damascus Road'. In 2002 DOC HOLLIDAY put in a memorable showing at the 'Sweden Rock' festival.
A 2003 collection, 'Gunfighter - The Best Of The 90s', of note for the inclusion of previously unreleased tracks, preceded a band new studio outing 'Good Time Music'. This latest DOC HOLLIDAY album featured covers of LYNYRD SKYNYRD's 'Simple Man', J.J. CALE's 'Magnolia' and CHARLIE DANIELS 'Trudy'.
