Biography
From Atlanta, Georgia, MOTHER'S FINEST have, for the most part in their lengthy career, conceptually played a different kind of style to anybody else. 1983's 'One Mother To Another' album found MOTHER'S FINEST at a crossroads in their career and, in retrospect, taking the wrong road with an R&B album that bore little relation to their previous work. With Glenn Murdock playing merely a producer's role, Joyce Kennedy (a.k.a. 'Baby Jean' but strangely going under the name of Joyce Washington in the co-production credits), guitarist Gary 'Mo Moses' Moore and bassist Jerry Seay ('The Wizzard') were joined on guitar by Greg Willis. The revised band line-up was completed by Wizzard's drummer brother Harold Seay and keyboard player Doug Bare. The latter would join Wizzard in BLACKFOOT in 1987.
After the band finally split in 1983 Moses Mo formed the Hard Rock outfit ILLUSION with B.B. Queen, who had spent a year behind the skins for MOLLY HATCHET. The band tended to be an extention of the powerful sounds created by MOTHERS FINEST on the 'Iron Age' album. Borden joined THE OUTLAWS in 1993. During the time between the disbandment of the original band and its resurrection, Joyce Kennedy recorded two albums for A&M, gaining a Grammy nomination in 1984, achieved Top 10 singles success. Wizzard had spells with ex-FLEETWOOD MAC star STEVIE NICKS and recorded with BLACKFOOT.
Following the release of 'Looks Could Kill', a rejuvenated MOTHER'S FINEST toured Britain and Europe with Soul Funk band MAZE. Due to family commitments Moses quit the band after the tour and was replaced by North Carolina native John Hayes, a friend of Wizzard's. Hayes had previously been a member of PG13, the nand that also gave frontman Jesse Dupree to JACKYL.
The 'Sublaxation' album arose from new demos recorded shortly before meeting legendary German Metal producer Dieter Dierks. Dierks had remembered the band appearing on German Television's popular 'Rockpalast' concert series in the 70's. Returning to Germany in the summer of 1990 MOTHER'S FINEST toured with the German outfit NEW LEGEND.
Rather than recording a studio album MOTHER'S FINEST felt happier returning to the fore with a live album. 'Subluxation' was thus recorded at a show in Oberhausen. The success in Germany led to a deal in the States with Scotti Brothers and the group would take on board a heavier sound, influenced by contemporary acts.
The prophetically titled 'Black Radio Won't Play This Record' emerged during 1992. The record found their new influence with regards to the crunch factor of the majority of the material on offer. The group ventured over to Britain on a number of occasions, opening for BADLANDS and also DAN REED NETWORK before seemingly setting up home in Germany where they laid plans to record another album. Unfortunately, this has yet to see the light.
MOTHER'S FINEST signed to MTM Music in early 2006 to release a live album recorded at the Villa Berg in Stuttgart, Germany in December 2004. The record also included four new studio tracks cut in collaboration with LIVING COLOUR's Vernon Reid and Swedish Industrialists CLAWFINGER.
