Biography

EULOGY, despite only managing a solitary mini album release 'The Essence', was a renowned and influential force in the Florida Thrash / Death Metal transitional scene during the early 90s. The band was originally established in Virginia by vocalist Jason Avery, guitarist Jarrett Pritchard and bass player Mike Beardon. A debut demo was cut with the aid of a drum machine before EULOGY relocated to Florida in order to hook up with drummer 'Aantar' Lee Coates, a veteran citing credits such as NECROSIS, EXMORTIS and IMPIETY. However, within weeks Coates was out of the picture, duly replaced by Clayton Gore.

The band debuted on the live front in January of 1992, opening a gig in Tampa for MONSTROSITY and BRUTALITY. For a brief period EULOGY operated with second guitarist Jerry Mortillero, later of DIABOLIC. However, this line up never performed live or recorded. Back as a quartet the band recorded the 1992 Tom Harris produced demo session 'Dismal'. For these recordings EULOGY introduced Jay Medina on guitar in Mortillero's stead.

Later that same year a deal was scored with the Dutch Cenotaph label and recording commenced for the mini album 'The Essence'. However, in spite of fronting the money for these studio sessions themselves the record was massively delayed, surfacing as late as 1994. A tour of Florida ensued in alliance with GOREPHOBIA and IMMOLATION after which Medina exited. BRUTALITY's Jay Fernandez would deputize but then in another bodyblow Beardon decamped.

Down to the surviving trio of Pritchard, Avery and Gore EULOGY attempted to regroup bringing in Ed Webb on bass and RIPPING CORPSE man Erik Rutan on guitar. Rutan soon bade his farewell to join premier act MORBID ANGEL and Dave Sawyer stepped into the breach for live work. A demo tape, 'Lesson In Fear', surfaced in January of 1995, a track from which, 'Human Harvest', appeared on the Metal Blade 'Metal Massacre MMXII' compilation.

Shortly after EULOGY folded. Avery became frontman for MONSTROSITY. Jarret Pritchard switched from guitar to bass in order to enroll in CANEPHORA. Beardon had founded ANGEL TRUMPETS, a band operating in parallel with EULOGY that also saw contributions from Fernandez, Avery and Gore. ANGEL TRUMPETS had cut a two song demo in December of 1993. The drummer would also enjoy a brief term with Erik Rutan's ALAS project band.

Webb teamed up with BRUTALITY before joining forces with formative EULOGY drummer Lee Coates in DIABOLIC. Later Webb, ex-EULOGY guitarist Dave Sawyer and the erstwhile BRUTALITY pairing of Pete Sykes and Jim Coker founded CONTORTED. Guitarist Jarret Pritchard forged THE STELLAR CORE. In 2003 Clayton Gore re-surfaced as part of St. Louis, Missouri Black Metal band HARKONIN.
