Biography
Highly imaginative band held in high esteem. SAIGON KICK was one of the few bands to add a dose of originality to the genre whilst still maintaining their Rock roots. The band was founded in Miami during 1988 with an initial line up of vocalist Matt Kramer, guitarist Jason Bieler, bassist Tom DeFile and drummer Phil Varone signing to the Atlantic label two years later. During down time in SAIGON KICK's schedule Bieler joined Swedish act TALISMAN for touring duties promoting their first album.
SAIGON KICK's debut album made an immediate impact internationally for its diversity and unashamed experimentation. The band soon garnered a cult following which tipped over into general public acclaim with the sophomore release 'The Lizard'. SAIGON KICK also broke the Billboard chart's with 'Love Is On The Way' reaching number 8 in America. This song is often erroneously reported as being a cover version of the CHASE 1974 hit but is in factv a SAIGON KICK Original.
As the album reached gold sales status the band toured America as guests to EXTREME, drafting in Robbie Gennet on keyboards. Gennet's position was renewed after these dates for the ensuing dates to promote follow up album 'The Lizard'. He subsequently toured with 7MARY3 before founding his own ROBBIE GENNET BAND for an album 'The Dream' and then RUDY for the 'Booty' CD.
Following 'The Lizard' album DeFile and SAIGON KICK parted ways. Chris McLernon, formerly with COLD SWEAT was playing in the acclaimed, Los Angeles based KISS tribute band COLD GIN when he was offered the gig with SAIGON KICK in July of 1992, just as 'The Lizard' album was hitting the record stores. However, his involvement with the band got off to a bad start when, having decided to drive from California to his new home in SAIGON KICK's native Florida his truck caught alight. McLernon had the misfortunate of losing all his possessions in the ensuing fire, including the Gene Simmons oufit he'd worn in his stint with COLD GIN.
Tom DeFile created a proposed band project with former BEGGARS AND THIEVES drummer Bobby Borg, ex-HERICANE ALICE singer Bruce Naumman and Adam Wacht of TROUBLE TRIBE. The act floundered when Borg joined WARRANT.
1993's SAIGON KICK album 'Water' was originally to be titled rather controversially 'Fields Of Rape'. Kramer quit mid way through recording and Bieler took over lead vocal duties.
Strangely the band lost their Atlantic deal and 1995's 'Devil In The Details' emerged on C.M.C. International. Shortly after SAIGON KICK ceased operations. Kramer initially busied himself with a project entitled COMA in collusion with Harry Cody of Sweden's SHOTGUN MESSIAH and former KING OF THE HILL guitarist Jimmy Griffin. This outfit was set to release an album during 1995 but this never transpired.
Putting SAIGON KICK on hold, Bieler and guitarist Pete Dembrowski, a man also having credits with SCREAM N' DREAM, concentrated on an offshoot outfit called FLAT and signed a deal with MCA Records in late 1997, although Chris McLernon announced his departure from both projects due to his desire to pursue other avenues. The bassist claimed that his leaving was completely amicable. Varone re-emerged as part of the SKID ROW side project PRUNELLA SCALES.
As Bieler announced his debut solo album in 1998 'Houston...We Have A Problem' SAIGON KICK saw a fresh release titled 'Moments From The Fringe'. Made up of rare and archive material the CD was initially only available to order through the internet. Quite surreally, Bieler was now calling himself 'The Great Goat Lord'. FLAT meanwhile mutated into SUPER TRANSATLANTIC pulling in former EXTREME bassist Pat Badger and drummer Ricky Sanders for the 'Shuttlecock' album.
SAIGON KICK reformed in 2000 comprising of Kramer, DeFile and Varone. For live work the band used the temporary services of SLAUGHTER's Jeff Blando, Varone joined SKID ROW in mid 2000. Bieler would produce the 'Statement' debut album for Hardcore act NONPOINT the same year.
Kramer would session on solo work from former LION and BAD MOON RISING guitarist DOUG ALDRICH during 2001. The singer would then launch a solo career, debuting with 2003's 'War & Peas' album. In January 2006 Phil Varone founded Los Angeles based AMERICAN HEADTRIP.
