Biography
Rapcore Nu-Metal band LIMP BIZKIT had an accelerated rise to stardom from a debut supporting HOUSE OF PAIN during 1996. Frontman Fred Durst has gone out of his way to court controversy inciting bitter media wars with CREED and TAPROOT whilst the band has openly supported the Napster website even undertaking a Napster sponsored tour. With the maelstrom of headlines surrounding them LIMP BIZKIT still outsold all the competition with ease. LIMP BIZKIT's first three albums sold over 20 million copies in the U.S.A. alone, with another 13 million being shifted in the rest of the world.
LIMP BIZKIT's 1998 American tour, dubbed the 'Ladies Night In Cambodia' trek, which found the headline act including numerous covers in their live set from the likes of JANE'S ADDICTION and HOUSE OF PAIN, saw strong support from SEVENDUST and CLUTCH. Expanding their sound, DJ Lethal (real name Lee) joined the band from EVERLAST and HOUSE OF PAIN.
Further exposure was gained as Fred Durst appeared as a guest on SOULFLY's debut album plus COLD and KORN's 1998 albums. The 1999 Terry Date produced 'Significant Other' album would see both STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Scott Weiland and KORN's Jonathon Davis guesting on the track 'Nobody Like You'. METHOD MAN would also figure on the song 'N 2 Gether Now'.
The frontman would also put in a guest showing on ex-MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee's METHODS OF MAYHEM debut album in 2000. LIMP BIZKIT put in a number of free gigs in America during 2000 in collaboration with CYPRESS HILL.
The band's wryly titled 'Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavoured Water' album broke all records upon its release selling an awesome one million copies in it's first week of release and debuting at number 1 on the Billboard charts. The previous record for first week sales had been held by PEARL JAM's 'Vs' album just shy of a million copies. Quite remarkably the band also scored a British number one single with 'Rollin'.
Borland, along with his brother Scott, would make space in late 2000 to record an album with his solo venture entitled BIG DUMB FACE.
The ever active Durst would also direct the video for STAIND's debut single 'It's Been A While'. DJ Lethal meantime would guest on the debut album from PROFESSIONAL MURDER MUSIC.
LIMP BIZKIT's sole UK show for 2001 had the band headlining the mammoth Milton Keynes bowl outdoor venue over DEFTONES, OUTKAST and GODSMACK.
Remixes of the single 'My Way' would see alternate versions offered up by Rap star PUFF DADDY and Dance guru producer William Orbit. LIMP BIZKIT's next single 'Boiler' was a result of real people power having been voted in by an online poll on the bands website.
Seemingly at the crest of success Wes Borland shocked fans by announcing his departure on October 12th 2001. Apparently Borland was to pursue a further album with BIG DUMB FACE as well as a venture with Kyle Weeks and Greg Isabel entitled GUTTA-PERCHA. However, later reports would have Borland's new act credited as EAT THE DAY.
As LIMP BIZKIT set about finding a replacement for the guitar position, by holding a high profile audition 'tour' across America, Durst kept the band in the limelight by appearing on a Rock version of MARVIN GAYE's 'What's Going On?' cut by an all star cast as a fund raiser for victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. December of 2001 would see another LIMP BIZKIT album in the stores albeit a record comprising revamped existing material titled 'New Old Songs'. Conspiring in this effort would witness the familiar faces of Durst and DJ Lethal alongside figures such as Butch Vig of GARBAGE, DJ Premier, P Diddy, TIMBALAND, THE NEPTUNES and producer William Orbit.
Durst would make space to collaborate with Rap star DMX on two songs, one for use on the soundtrack for the Wesley Snipes movie 'Undisputed'. Meantime DJ Lethal set to work with Darryl 'DMC' McDaniels of Rappers RUN DMC on a Hard Rock inspired solo album 'Homicidal, Suicidal & Political'.
Despite the media intense 'audition' tour it would be learned in March that guitarist Shaun Lopez of THE REVOLUTION SMILE had been approached to fill the vacancy left by Borland but had turned the offer down. Rumours would then circulate that SNOT man Mike Smith had been enrolled. Meantime in April drummer John Otto would form part of Rapper JAY-Z's backing band for an appearance at the Los Angeles ESPN Action Sports & Music Awards ceremony.
LIMP BIZKIT would remain in the spotlight throughout the summer of 2002 as the Sydney coroner's court opened a case regarding an Australian fan, 15-year-old Jessica Michalik who died during the band's set at the Australian 'Big Day Out' festival in January of 200, it being alleged that the band had some responsibility toward the death. The band and their management blamed poor organisation for the tragedy. Fred Durst, claiming a fear of flying prevented his actual appearance in court, gave his evidence via a satellite link up.
During August the rumour mill surrounding LIMP BIZKIT put Borland back in the frame for a reunion with his former band colleagues, something the guitarist, now building up his new group EAT THE DAY, was swift to deny in the most vehement terms. On a more concrete note Rick Rubin was suggested as producer for the band's next album, provisionally entitled 'Less Is More'. In October it would be learnt that Page Hamilton of HELMET repute and KORN's Brian 'Head' Welch were assisting the band on writing sessions.
The band announced a summer stadium tour of the US allied with METALLICA and LINKIN PARK with support coming from DEFTONES and MUDVAYNE. Durst's personal affairs with Pop diva BRITNEY SPEARS maintained the band's high media profile but the band's new studio album, initially envisaged as going by the title 'Bipolar' and originally scheduled for April issue, was pushed back to mid June as the band were revealed to still be laying down new tracks, in collaboration with Rappers SNOOP DOGG, JAY-Z and BUBBA SPARXXX in late March.
LIMP BIZKIT brought in KORN guitarist Head and former SNOT six stringer Mike Smith for an appearance at the 'WrestleMania XIX' event in Seattle, Washington on 30th March. Subsequent reports had the band completely starting album recordings afresh with Smith, slating a September release, and side lining the previous efforts. Durst also surprised fans by revealing he had for some time been working up an "Eighties" sounding solo endeavour dubbed PACIFICA.
In keeping with the campaign of intrigue surrounding the new record by August Durst was claiming 'Surrender' as the finalised album title. However, within a matter of days 'Results May Vary' was being touted as the actual name of the record with lead off single being a cover of THE WHO's 'Behind Blue Eyes'. The promotional video for this track scored healthy upfront news coverage with its inclusion of star actress Halle Berry.
Meantime former guitarist Wes Borland was back in the news as the existence of an all new side project excited fans. It was learnt that DAMNING THE WELL comprised no less than Borland alongside FILTER frontman Richard Patrick, NINE INCH NAILS man Danny Lohner and A PERFECT CIRCLE's drummer Josh Freese.
'Results May Vary' shifted over 320,000 copies in its first week of US sales, entering the Billboard charts at no. 3, a far cry from their previous effort 'Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water', which had sold over one million units in its debut week. Taking fans by surprise would be the confirmation that LIMP BIZKIT was to tour Australia as support to veteran Rockers KISS that Spring. So odd was this combination that not only did KISS fans protest but the concert promoters took the unusual step of justifying their decision to pair the two bands by way of a press statement. Resulting strong fan opposition meant that by February LIMP BIZKIT's involvement had been curtailed.
The band were soon making positive news on the gig front though, confirmed for an appearance at the first annual 'Desert Rock' show, held in the United Arab Emirates capital of Dubai. Another first for the band would be less than positive, their show at the Spodek Sports Hall in Katowice, Poland on 22nd March pulled when a bomb threat was made just two hours before the concert. Over 4,500 were evacuated. Shortly after, LIMP BIZKIT pulled both the Dubai event and projected South African shows.
Whilst in preperation for a new band album, 'The Unquestionable Truth (Part 1)', LIMP BIZKIT's DJ Lethal cut a solo single 'State Of The Art'. Guest vocals came from LINKIN PARK's Chester Bennington. In August it was revealed that LIMP BIZKIT had reunited with guitarist Wes Borland. In June 2005 the Recording Industry Association of America revealed LIMP BIZKIT had sold over 16 million albums in the USA. The November 'Greatest Hitz' compilation sold 23,000 copies in its first week of US sales to debut at no. 47. That same month found the band writing tracks for a new album.
LIMP BIZKIT's 2009 reunion 'Unicorns N' Rainbows' tour kicked off on Wednesday 20th May in Riga, Latvia.
