Biography
Fiona Flanagan, a native of New Jersey, arrived in a blaze of publicity at the age of 23 with her debut album, released in 1985, and featuring the MTV approved first single, the Amanda Blue penned 'Talk To Me'. International media coverage was intense, with 'Kerrang!' magazine in the UK fawning all over her in particular. After playing the bars of New York City since she was 16, a FIONA demo landed on the desk of Atlantic Records' Jason Flom. Impressed, the man made moves to sign the singer and the label put her to work in a recording studio to create debut product.
FIONA's self-titled album certainly bore proof of Ms Flanagan's vocal pedigree. For this opus she would be backed by a pedigree team comprising ex-STARZ guitarist Bobby Messano, erstwhile ALICE COOPER bassist Donnie Kisselbach, keyboard player Benjy King and TWISTED SISTER drummer Joe Franco. The album was produced by ex-GOOD RATS frontman Peppi Marchello. The European release of the album boasts different cover artwork from the original American version.
Fiona's debut appearance had actually been her contribution to the soundtrack album of 'No Small Affair' with 'Love Makes You Blind', which also graced the debut album.
'Beyond The Pale', produced by FIONA's then boyfriend and producer Beau Hill, boasted WINGER's guitarist Reb Beach and bassist KIP WINGER. Also in evidence were Kisselbach, Messano and ex RAINBOW drummer David Rosenberg. Noted session singer SANDY STEWART also added vocal parts. The album proved a more mature effort than the debut and included a cover of CHI COLTRANE's 'Thunder And Lightning'.
FIONA raised her profile considerably in 1987 by starring alongside Rupert Everett and Bob Dylan in the movie 'Hearts Of Fire' and also making an appearance in the TV series 'Miami Vice'
1988's 'Heart Like A Gun' album sees guest guitar from NIGHTRANGER man BRAD GILLIS and rhythm from WINGER men Kip Winger on bass and Rod Morgenstein on drums. Various artists appear as backing vocalists, including DAVID GLEN EISLEY of GIUFFRIA.
Switching labels from Atlantic to Geffen, Fiona found herself under the guidance of A&R legend John Kalodner.
1992's 'Squeeze' was more of a band affair, featuring ex Y&T drummer Jimmy DeGrasso, bassist Laura McDonald and VINCE NEIL guitarist Dave Marshall and found Fiona signed to new label Geffen. CHEAP TRICK's Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen lent their songwriting skills. The album was produced by MARC TANNER, at the time riding upon the success of his collaboration with NELSON.
