Biography

DRIVER was the original name for the M.A.R.S. project which resulted in the 'Project Driver' album of 1987. M.A.R.S. included the renowned figures of ex-QUIET RIOT and OZZY OSBOURNE bassist Rusy Sarzo, guitar protégé TONY MACALPINE and former BLACK OAK ARKANSAS and OZZY OSBOURNE band drummer Tommy Aldridge. Initially the band enlisted the services of former YNGWIE MALMSTEEN band vocalist JEFF SCOTT SOTO. However, Soto was soon relaced by Jeff Fenholt, a veteran of BIBLE BLACK, RONDINELLI, JOSHUA, ARMAGEDDON and (controversially) BLACK SABBATH. Fenholt's tenure lasted over a year during which time DRIVER was offered a recording deal with the Epic label. Unfortunately the deal collapsed and Fenholt bowed out, making a successful career for himself as a TV evangelist. Singer ROB ROCK, previously with VICE, JOSHUA and IMPELLITERRI was drafted in to record the album.

M.A.R.S. folded when Sarzo and Aldridge founded the short lived NRG prior to being inducted into the ranks of WHITESNAKE.

Rock revived the DRIVER title in 1989 pulling in his erstwhile JOSHUA colleagues bassist Emil Lech Brando, also a veteran of TERRIF and SOUNDBARRIER, and keyboard player Greg Schulz with guitarist Roy Z and ex SAHARA drummer Reynold 'Butch' Carlson. Demos were cut with PAUL SABU at the helm.

Rock subsequently relocated from Los Angeles to Connecticut taking Roy Z and Lech Brando with him and utilizing the services of drummer B.J. Zampa.

DRIVER folded when Rock rejoined IMPELLITERRI and worked with German guitar guru AXEL RUDI PELL. Roy Z created TRIBE OF GYPSIES and would earn a reputation as an in demand producer. Zampa worked with TONY MACALPINE, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, THUNDERHEAD and DAVID WAYNE'S METAL CHURCH. ROB ROCK issued a solo album in 2000 that included his old colleagues Roy Z and Butch Carlson.

The DRIVER brand marked a surprise return in September 2008, with Rock, Z and Carlson being joined by keyboard player Ed Roth and bassist Aaron Samson, of CARRERA and ODIN, for the album 'Sons Of Thunder'.
