Biography

PAPA ROACH is a Nu-Metal act, fronted by Jacoby 'Coby Dick' Shaddix, which blend Hip Hop, Funk and Rock. Founded in Vacaville, Northern California during 1993. PAPA ROACH issued a string of independent EPS commencing with the 'Potatoes For Christmas' offering in 1994. Following the 1995 single release 'Caca Bonita' bassist Will James, unable to fully commit to the group due to Christian Summer camp obligations, bowed out in favour of Tobin Esperance.

A full length debut album 'Old Friends From Young Years', reportedly recorded for a miserly $700, arrived during February 1997. The national breakthrough for the band was triggered by signing to the Dreamworks label. This union resulting in the April 2000 top 20 album 'Infest' which went on to rack up sales of over three million copies. PAPA ROACH toured America in late 2000 with support from STRUNG OUT. January 2001 found (HED) P.E. supporting PAPA ROACH for shows in Britain. These dates propelled the single 'Last Resort', with a main riff bearing an uncanny resemblance to IRON MAIDEN's 'Infinite Dreams', into the UK charts peaking at number three.

It would be revealed in the Spring of 2002 that PAPA ROACH had recorded two cover versions for use on future projects in the form of FAITH NO MORE's 'Naked In Front Of The Computer' and THE PIXIES 'Gouge Away'. The group would pull off a sponsorship deal with the giant Pepsi drinks corporation which would almost immediately land the band in hot water. Not only did the family minded Pepsi promotion team have to explain the band's appearance in the 2000 soft porn movie 'Backstage Sluts 3', which showed footage of the band chucking cold meats at a naked woman but in August Jacoby Shaddix had reportedly drank his own urine onstage at a club gig in Boston. Although denied, the story made national headlines.

PAPA ROACH and the MURDERDOLLS hooked up for an extensive run of European shows throughout October and November. The band would also mark a first by being added to the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS tour of Australia, commencing November 26th in Brisbane. Throughout January and February of 2003 the band headlined across North America with Swedes BLINDSIDE as support. Dave Buckner caused a media splash in June, announcing his engagement to model Mia Tyler, daughter of AEROSMITH's Steven Tyler.

The band would spend the latter months of 2003 working up a new Howard Benson produced album with suggestions that the eventual title might be 'Dancing In The Ashes' or 'Getting Away With Murder'. Meantime, singer Jacoby Shaddix's Metalcore side concern FIGHT THE SKY entered Sacramento, California's Velvet Tone Studios on 9th January to cut their debut offering 'Seven Deadly Songs'.

PAPA ROACH announced a short burst of five shows for March of 2004, with support lent by DIE TRYING and STILLLIFE PROJECTOR, leading up to their appearance at the 'South by Southwest Music' festival. The band then readied a brand new album, 'Getting Away With Murder' produced by Howard Benson, for September release. The album sold just over 52,000 copies in its first week of US sales, debuting at no. 17 on the Billboard charts.

January of 2005 found PAPA ROACH performing five shows at US military bases in South Korea. That same month both Jacoby Shaddix and Tobin Esperance donated their skills to song 'Forever In Our Hearts', conceived by GODHEAD's Jason Miller as a benefit effort in aid of the Indian Ocean tsunami victims. A support gig in Mexico City to MARILYN MANSON preceded the band's own US headline tour with SKINDRED and THE F-UPS in tow, commencing 17th February in Seattle. 'Getting Away With Murder' was certified platinum status for one million albums sold in the USA during November.

European shows throughout August into October saw WICKED WISDOM as support. The band announced their participation in the H.I.M. headlined 'No Sleep Till Halloween' US tour dates for October 2006, backed by LOSTPROPHETS. PAPA ROACH then jumped onboard the GUNS N' ROSES / SEBASTIAN BACH US tour until November 3rd before commencing a headline trek dubbed the 'Zippo Hot' tour backed by (HED) P.E., BULLETS AND OCTANE plus STEALING DECEMBER.

US and Canadian shows across January and February 2007 were supported by IT DIES TODAY. A second round of touring throughout February and into March saw support from KILL HANNAH and IT DIES TODAY.

In 2008 PAPA ROACH toured with SIXX: A.M., MÖTLEY CRÜE, BUCKCHERRY and others as part of 'Crüe Fest', then commenced on a fresh North American trek with STAIND and SEETHER starting 4th October 4 in Columbia, Maryland.

The band's fifth album, 'Metamorphosis' originally scheduled for the autumn of 2008, was pushed back into spring 2009. These sessions were composed at Paramour Mansion and then recorded at NRG Recording Studios. The album was co-produced by Jay Baumgardener and PAPA ROACH. James Michael also co-produced five tracks. A promotional video for the song 'Lifeline' was shot on 4th February with music video director Christopher Sims. Meantime, PAPA ROACH would be on the road throughout North America with AVENGED SEVENFOLD, BUCKCHERRY and SAVING ABEL throughout February and March.
