Biography
Punk / Alt Metal outfit SNOT created a seismic impact based upon their sole album 'Get Some', released by Geffen Records in May 1997. The group had first demoed in 1995, followed by sessions in March 1996. Guitarist Sonny Mayo had formatively been involved with DC Metro area Thrash Metal band SILENCE then MF PITBULLS, a Punk act fronted by Shannon Larkin. This latter character also worked with another pre-SNOT member, bassist John Fahnestock (a.k.a. 'Tumor') in the band KIDDIE PORN.
Frontman Lynn Strait, a native of Manhasset, New York, had previously never sang with a band. His only other vocal offering had been as a duet with Tairrie B on TURA SATANA's debut album on the track 'Down'. When SNOT signed their contract with major label Geffen Records, Strait was incarcerated in county jail, serving a month long sentence.
Boosted by radio play for the singles 'Stoopid', 'I Jus' Lie' and 'Tecato', SNOT scored a slot on the roving 'Ozzfest' festivals in 1997. Frontman Lynn Strait created quite a stir when onstage in Great Woods the man apparently received a blowjob in full public view. The Massachusetts authorities were none too amused and arrested him for indecent behaviour.
Sonny Mayo decamped in May 1998 and was replaced by Mike Smith. In August drummer Jamie Miller was superseded by the MF PITBULLS, WRATHCHILD AMERICA and UGLY KID JOE credited Shannon Larkin. SNOT donated a song 'Absent' to the 'Strangeland' movie soundtrack in 1998.
The band came to a tragic and abrupt halt when Strait died in a six vehicle car crash on the Los Angeles - Santa Barbera highway on 11th December 1998. This accident also killed the band's mascot, a bulldog called Dobbs that had featured on the cover of 'Get Some'. SNOT had recorded the music for an intended second album but Strait had only laid down vocals for one track, a re-worked version of 'Absent'.
The tracks originally intended for a projected second album were re-worked as a tribute to Strait with guest vocalists billed as 'Strait Up' issued in November 2000. OZZY OSBOURNE provided a spoken word tribute. Contributions included 'Starlit Eyes' featuring Serj Tankian of SYSTEM OF A DOWN, 'Take It Back' featuring Jonathan Davis of KORN, 'I Know Where You're At' fronted by M.C.U.D. of (HED)P.E., 'Catch A Spirit' sang by Max Cavelara of SOULFLY, 'Until Next Time' featuring Jason Sears of R.K.L., 'Divided (An Argument For The Soul)' featuring Brandon Boyd from INCUBUS, 'Angel's Son' featuring both Clint Lowery and Lajon Witherspoon of SEVENDUST, 'Forever' featuring Fred Durst of LIMP BIZKIT, 'Funeral Flights' featuring Dez Fafara of COAL CHAMBER, 'Requiem' featuring Corey Taylor of SLIPKNOT, 'Reaching Out' delivered by SUGAR RAY's Mark McGrath. The album closed with Lynn Strait's last recorded song with the band 'Absent', plus 'Sad Air' a narration by Strait backed by Sonny Mayo which segued into an unlisted song comprising a mix of 'Get Some' album cuts mixed by DJ Lethal.
'Angel's Son' was lifted as a single and enjoyed heavy radio rotation. SEVENDUST subsequently re-recorded the track for their 'Animosity' album.Tairrie B's MY RUIN paid homage to Strait with their track 'Rockstar'.
A third release, 'Alive', was recorded in concert in May 1998 at the Hollywood Palace. Released in July 2002 on the Hip-O Records label and produced by Nic Adler, this set also hosted a further unreleased studio song headed up by Lynn Strait entitled 'Choose What?'.
Mike Doling joined up with SOULFLY in 1999, replacing Logan Mader and recording three albums with the band. Doling also joined LIMP BIZKIT for an appearance at the 'WrestleMania XIX' event in Seattle, Washington on 30th March 2003. That September he created a brand new project billed as ABLOOM. Doling subsequently forged INVITRO, releasing the album 'When I Was A Planet' in September 2007.
Bassist John Fahnestock joined AMEN and would feature with LO-PRO and NOISE WITHIN alongside former NOTHINGFACE drummer Tommy Sickles. In side activity Fahnestock fronted up merchandising companies 313 Merch and Kill Your Culture. Sonny Mayo teamed up with SOULFLY in May 1998, remaining a member until 2004. The guitarist also contributed heavily to VANILLA ICE's album 'Hard To Swallow'. Mayo substituted for Clint Lowery in SEVENDUST, a position he held from January 2005 until March 2008.
Mike Smith and Jamie Miller founded HERO, re-branded as THE START, with Aimee Echo and Scott Ellis of HUMAN WASTE PROJECT. Smith joined the ranks of LIMP BIZKIT in 2003, leaving this act in 2004 to create EVOLVER.SNOT reunited in 2008, the membership featuring original members Mikey Doling on guitar, John Fahnestock on bass, Jamie Miller on drums and Sonny Mayo on second guitar along with a fresh addition, former DIVINE HERESY vocalist Tommy Cummings (a.k.a. Tommy Vext). A new song, entitled 'The Band Plays On', was launched online on 7th August. SNOT played its first show in over a decade on Wednesday 20th August at Velvet Jones on State St. in Santa Barbara, California. An autumn US tour followed flanking DEVILDRIVER.
SNOT revealed they were in rehearsals with a new singer in June 2009.
