Biography
Brutal Death Metal in its most undiluted state. San Jose, California's EXHUMED have made unrelenting progress despite being wrought into ever new incarnations by constant line up changes over the years. The band first made their mark in 1991 with an inaugural roster of frontman Jake Giardina, guitarist Derrel Houdashelt and Matt Harvey, bassist Ben Marrs and drummer Col Jones.
EXHUMED debuted with a stark statement of intent with the demo 'Dissecting The Caseated Omentum'. A 7" single 'Excreting Innards' proved there was to be no concessions to compromise. Ramming the point home EXHUMED would garner valuable exposure for their sick artform guesting for visiting dignatories such as AUTOPSY, ENTOMBED, CANNIBAL CORPSE and MORBID ANGEL. A whole slew of uncompromising demo cassettes would ensue beginning with 'Gorgasm'.
With the dismissal of Marrs in November 1993 Ross Sewage would front the band as Giardina deputised on bass for 1993's 'Grotesque Putrefied Brains'. Further touring had the band out with heavyweights DISMEMBER, SUFFOCATION and VADER.
Another promotional tape was offered titled 'Cadaveric Splatter Platter'. These sessions had Harvey responsible for both guitar and bass as Giardina bade his farewell. Mark Smith would come in on bass but would soon decamp. Matt Widener was later inducted as permanent bassist. The revised band cut a further demo session 'Horrific Expulsion Of Gore' in late 1994. The following year witnessed an exclusive new track 'Necro-Fornicator' being contributed the the Morbid Metal compilation album 'Deterioration Of The Senses' and a shared live cassette in alliance with notorious Spanish Death Metal brethren HAEMMORHAGE. However, Widener would vacate his position and Sewage wound up adding bass guitar to his duties. Having his own graphics company Sewage would be responsible for much of EXHUMED's horrificly graphic artwork.
Another rare track 'Intercourse With A Limbless Cadaver' was included on the 'Orchestrated Chaos' compilation put out by Soulside Records in March of 1996. EXHUMED would share space with the equally twisted Ohian act HEMDALE on a split album 'In The Name Of Gore' and issue a split 7" single with PALE EXISTENCE the same year. Further ructions saw the release of Houdashelt and the swift substitution with Leon Del Muerte.
Del Muerte would figure on recordings made for a four way split EP 'Chords Of Chaos' for Lofty Storm Productions which parred EXHUMED off with NECROSE, BLEEDING DISORDER and EXCRETED ALIVE. The new guitarist would also feature on the compilation track 'Bleeding Heap Of Menstrual Carnage' donated to the 'Accidental Double Homicide' collection on Satan's Pimp Records before leaving the ranks to found IMPALED.
Down to a trio EXHUMED set out on a support tour of America guesting for MORTIIS before hooking up with the European extravaganza 'Grind Over Europe II'. This gargantuan Death package nestled EXHUMED in amongst the likes of VOMITORY, AGATHOCLES, DERANGED, KADATH, HEMDALE and NYCTOPHOBIC. With the fulfillment of these dates EXHUMED, limbering up for dates in Mexico, was back up to strength as a quartet with the induction of ex-BURIAL and BEREAVE guitarist Mike Beams.
During 1997 vocalist / guitary Matt Harvey (as 'Matt Hellfiend') and drummer Andy 'Col' Jones (as 'Atomic Maniac') founded the retro Thrash side project DEKAPITATOR. Debuting with a split 7" single shared with NUNSLAUGHTER and following this up with a 1999 album 'We Will Destroy,...You Will Obey' DEKAPITATOR succeeded in generating generous praise globally for their efforts.
EXHUMED signed to Death Metal afficianados Relapse Records for the 1998 'Gore Metal' full length debut. The album saw production courtesy of former TESTAMENT, DEATH and CANCER guitarist JAMES MURPHY. Not neglecting the singles market 1998 proved fruitful for EXHUMED collectors as the band graced no less than three split affairs in cahoots with RETALIATION on the 'Tales Of The Exhumed' release for the Italian Headfucker concern, NYCTOPHOBIC as part of the 'Totally Fucking Dead' issue on Germany's Revenge Production label and also with PANTALONES ABAJO MARINERO for 'Indignities To The Dead'.
Sewage would bow out from EXHUMED in 1999 shortly after showings at the Massachusetss Metal & Hardcore Festival and the March Metal Meltdown event. Erstwhile PALE EXISTENCE bassist Bud Burke would fill the gap as EXHUMED undertook the Relapse 'Contamination' American tour alongside labelmates TODAY IS THE DAY, BENUMB, NASUM, CEPHALIC CARNAGE, SOILENT GREEN and MORGION.
The 2000 album 'Slaughtercult' would see a later re-issue as a saw shaped CD picture disc. Japanese versions came with an extra four bonus tracks. Touring to promote the album had EXHUMED on the road with VULGAR PIGEON, ABCESS and IMPALED. As 2001 broke EXHUMED kept up the tradition of the split 7" releases cutting a further effort with SANITY'S DAWN entitled 'Emeticide'.
Besides work with DEKAPITATOR both Harvey and Jones would also be in operation with the side project CADAVERIZER. Meantime bassist Bud Burke forged DYING IN YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP, a harsh Death Metal act conceived in union with guitarist Bruce Flores, previously a member of Hardcore act KISSING GIRLS WITH BROKEN JAWS, and bass guitarist Jeff Whalen from SoCal Punk act DESPISED.
A two CD EXHUMED anthology set was projected for early 2003 release entitled 'Platters Of Splatter: Cyclopedic Symposium Of Execrable Errata And Abhorrent Apocrypha 1992-2002'.
A new studio effort, 'Anatomy Is Destiny', fell foul of the censors in Germany when it was deemed that faked 'death' shots of the band members by photographer Alex Solca were too realistic for public consumption. The album was withdrawn from sale in that territory and re-issued with the offending artwork removed. EXHUMED united with KATAKLYSM, DIABOLIC and MALIGNANCY for September US dates before hitting Europe packaged with CEPHALIC CARNAGE and INHUME in October.
The band, pulling in the INFANTICIDE, IMPALED and MURDER CONSTRUCT credited Leon del Muerte on bass once again and drummer John Longstreth of ANGEL CORPSE, ORIGIN and SKINLESS repute, united with CANNIBAL CORPSE for a run of US dates commencing 12th February in Houston, Texas. They would then form up part of the 2004 European heavyweight 'No Mercy' festivals commencing 29th March, sharing billing with SPAWN OF POSSESSION, HYPOCRISY, KATAKLYSM, CARPATHIAN FOREST, VOMITORY, PREJUDICE and headliners CANNIBAL CORPSE. However, by that May Longstreth was ensconced in Metalcore outfit THE RED CHORD and by October had temporarily joined the ranks of DYING FETUS for US touring. He subsequently hooked up with a reformed DIM MAK.
In September Matt Harvey temporarily filled in as frontman for Thrash Metal veterans EXODUS on their Central and South American gigs in Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Argentina after vocalist Steve 'Zetro' Souza was taken ill. The following month Harvey, alongside EXHUMED drummer Col Jones, enrolled into the ranks of REPULSION. Despite these extracurricular activities EXHUMED, having severed ties with Relapse Records, maintained momentum, revealing plans for an album of cover versions entitled 'Regurgitated Requiems: Garbage Daze Re-Regurgitated'. Tracks would include HEXX's 'Twice As Bright, Half As Long', EPIDEMIC's 'In Fear We Kill', the AMEBIX 'The Power Remains', UNSEEN TERROR's 'Uninformed', G.B.H.'s 'Necrophilia', PENTAGRAM's 'The Ghoul', SIEGE's Drop Dead', MASTER's Pay To Die' and METALLICA's 'Trapped Under Ice'. The record would be picked up by Listenable Records for European license.
EXHUMED announced the addition of ex-FUCK THE FACTS and EXPERIMENT IN TERROR drummer Matt Connell to the ranks in November and later that same month revealed former member Leon del Muerte had rejoined in the bass position. Early 2005 found the band filming two shows in Los Angeles at the Alterknit Lounge room of the Knitting Factory for a DVD release. European dates scheduled for May witnessed an alliance with VOMITORY, ROTTEN SOUND and PROSTITUTE DISFIGUREMENT. However, the group parted ways with longtime guitarist Mike Beams upfront of these shows. Ex-UPHILL BATTLE Wes Caley substituted.
Leon del Muerte activated a side project billed INTRONAUT, a Progressive Metal styled band featuring Sacha Dunable, ex-ANUBIS RISING, Danny Walker of UPHILL BATTLE and Joe Lester. A four track demo, entitled 'Null – Demonstration Extended Play Compact Disc', arrived in 2005. EXHUMED partnered with ABSCESS, SKARP and INSANITY for a short burst of US dates in August 2005. European dates were scheduled, then pulled shortly afterwards.
A split EP, 'Something Sickened This Way Comes' shared with Czech band INGROWING released by Obscene Productions, included a cover version of NAPALM DEATH's 'Life'. Matt Connell activated Grindcore side project DRUDGERY in 2006, this band featuring Derek P.C. from ARISE AND RUIN on vocals, guitarist Brent Munger of ARISE AND RUIN plus Steve Ferraro of DEAR BLACK DIARY on bass.
