Biography
An act of huge potential that sadly failed to last the course. DÉTENTE was formed in Los Angeles in 1984 by ex-FIRST ATTACK and ALLIES front woman Dawn Crosby along with drummer Dennis Butler and guitarist Fred Tutone. The band recorded a demo tape and played around Los Angeles until the group's original bass player was fired along with Tutone. This line-up shuffle heralding the arrival of the dual guitar team of Celeb Quinn and Ross Robinson plus new ex-LIZZY BORDEN bassist Steve Hochheiser.
This incarnation recorded the debut 'Recognize No Authority' album, released in August 1986, produced by VINNIE VINCENT INVASION bassist Dana Strum. However, following the album release DETENTE, obviously forgetting their band name, broke up in acrimonious circumstances. Guitarists Ross Robinson and Caleb Quinn, together with bassist Steve Hochheiser, quit claiming the band title for themselves. A bitter war of words ensued in which Crosby retained the DETENTE banner. Robinson later played with CATALEPSY and MURDERCAR, the latter a union with DAMN THE MACHINE bassist Dave Clemmons and the MACHINE HEAD credited Dave McClain on drums.
The run of bad luck continued as Crosby's sole remaining band member drummer Dennis Butler was involved in a serious burn accident at a chemical plant putting the band out of action for several months. Upon his recovery DETENTE had effectively disintegrated so Butler busied himself jamming with local acts LOUD SENSELESS NOISE and VERMIN.
Crosby and Butler finally pulled DETENTE back together adding guitarists Mike Carlino and Gregg Cekalovich together with bassist George Rob.
In 1989 and now based in New Jersey, Crosby, Carlino and bassist Blair Darby recorded a three track demo, 'All That Remains', in New York with producer Alex Perialis, these sessions also seeing Rob 'Wacko' Hunter from RAVEN guesting on drums. The drumming stool was eventually filled a few months later by Eric Alpert then in quick succession Steve Cordova.
Warner Brothers records chased the band down for a deal. Due to the band name DÉTENTE already being registered the title SEDITION was chosen for a new album 'Within The Veil'. By the time of its release in 1991, 'Within The Veil' would be sporting a revised group monicker of FEAR OF GOD. As FEAR OF GOD, Crosby led an increasingly chaotic band line-up through two highly respected albums. Ultimately Crosby's well documented reliance on drugs and alcohol would catch up with her and on 15th December 1996 she died tragically young of liver failure.
Ross Robinson would go on to become a much sought after high profile producer being given large credit for the rising careers of acts such as KORN, MACHINE HEAD and SLIPKNOT.
DÉTENTE's classic album 'Recognize No Authority' was reissued in July 2007 via MVD Audio.
DÉTENTE announced a reformation in 2008 featuring vocalist Ann Boleyn, of HELLION and guitarist Michael Carlino, from FEAR OF GOD, alongside original DÉTENTE members Dennis Butler on drums, Caleb Quinn on guitar and Steve Hochheiser on bass. A re-debut was held at the July 5th 'Tidalwave Metal Fest 2008' in San Francisco.
