Biography

Described as groundbreaking Death Metal and avant-garde Hardcore, the ever challenging NEUROSIS have doggedly refused to be compartmentalised. The teenage NEUROSIS started as an Oakland trio in the mid 80's. Guitarist Scott Kelly and bassist Dave Edwardson had formed up the Jason Storey fronted VIOLENT COERCION, splitting this band in December 1985 to found a fresh endeavour. Drummer Jason Roeder enrolled and until January of 1987 NEOROSIS performed as a trio until the acquisition of second guitarist Chad Salter.

NEUROSIS made their first mark with the 1987 album 'Pain Of Mind' on the Alchemy label, the cover artwork notably executed by Kelly and Edwardson's erstwhile band colleague Jason Storey. Salter exited and the group drafted 'Pete' to record the Lookout! Records 'Aberration' 7” single.

In March 1989 the group added guitarist Steve Von Till for the 'Word As Law' album. With this outing the band made an indelible mark on the Rock scene with eclectic Alt Rock which blends a myriad of styles including even Gothic and Medieval overlaid with spiritually infused lyrical content. As such NEUROSIS are one of the very few bands to truly set themselves apart from the pack. In April 1991 NEUROSIS' ambitions to break out of Hardcore constrictions took a major step forward by introducing Simon Mcllroy on keyboards and film projectionist Adam Kendall. The band added ex-CHRIST ON PARADE keyboard Player Noah to their line-up for live work.

NEUROSIS signed to the Alternative Tentacles label for the 'Souls At Zero' album, confounding critics with a record that borrowed from Grunge, Gothic and Metal interspersed with string and woodwind as well as narrative passages from celluloid sources such as 'Triumph Of The Will' and 'Star Wars'.

Their 1996 'Through Silver In Blood' album, complete with an opening twelve minute title track, would land the group deserved accolades and opened up the NEUROSIS catalogue to the mainstream Rock public. April of 1997 found the band back on European soil, forming up the 'Full Of Hate' Easter festivals alongside OBITUARY, DEATH, SAMAEL, ENTOMBED, CROWBAR, KILLING CULTURE and STRAPPING YOUNG LAD. Touring in the UK witnessed support gigs to ENTOMBED during September and October. The 1999 'Times Of Grace' album was produced by the renowned Steve Albini. NEUROSIS toured America with TODAY IS THE DAY and UNSANE. European tour dates in October had the band partnered with Canadian veterans VOIVOD.

Aside from NEUROSIS, the band members would also operational with a conceptual side project titled TRIBES OF NEUROT under which guise they released the split 'Static Migration' CD together with WALKING TIME BOMBS in 1998.

Edwardson sessioned for NOISEGATE on their 1999 album. Vocalist Scott Kelly and keyboard player Noah Landis debuted their new band BLOOD AND TIME in 2003 with the album 'At The Foot Of The Garden'. NEUROSIS worked with Steve Albini once more for the 2004 album 'The Eye Of Every Storm', mixed at Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago. The band put in a special extended live set on 21st July at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, California to premier the material.

The band wrapped up sessions for the 'Given To The Rising' album in February 2007.
