Biography
San Francisco Heavy Metal act LÄÄZ ROCKIT vyed for attention amidst a wave of Thrash Metal bands, unfortunately having their profile suffer simply because of timing. The band was formed by vocalist Michael Coons and guitarist Aaron Jellum who stole second guitarist Phil Kettner from a rival local outfit. The inaugural bass player Dave Starr actually named the band, after the LAWS (Light Anti-tank Weapons System) rocket sci-fi weapon in the Clint Eastwood movie) as in their formative days they were called DEPTH CHARGE.
Having added drummer Victor Agnello to the ranks, LÄÄZ ROCKIT replaced Starr in 1983 with Willy Lange (Langenhuizen) following a support slot to RATT. Starr created power trio BLACK LEATHER before joining VICIOUS RUMOURS. Studio sessions in 1983 resulted in the demos 'Prelude To Death' and 'Rock Forever'.
LÄÄZ ROCKIT was originally signed to RATT manager Marshall Berle's Timecoast label, but Berle disbanded the company once his charges had been picked up by Atlantic Records, leaving the door open for Mark Leonard's Target concern to sign the group, releasing the debut 'City's Gonna Burn' album in September 1984.
LÄÄZ ROCKIT began a tour of North America in support of their debut album as opening act to GRIM REAPER and EXCITER, but would be unceremoniously removed after three shows. Lange would audition for the position of bassist for METALLICA in 1986.
With 'Know Your Enemy' gaining the band more media attention LÄÄZ ROCKIT managed some European shows opening for MOT?RHEAD and a slot on the prestigious Aardschock Festival in Holland. Agnello departed, but returned in time for American dates. Further British shows saw the band opening for EXODUS.
The band, having released a EP headed up with a cover version of the DEAD KENNEDYS 'Holiday In Cambodia' toured Europe with support from Dutchmen OSIRIS in 1989. The group gained further exposure with the inclusion of the 'Leatherface' track on the soundtrack to the horror movie 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre III". This recording featured guitarist Jeff Weller and drummer Sven Soderland.
The 1991 album 'Nothing Sacred' saw Coons and Jellum joined by bassist Scott Dominguez, guitarist Scott Sargeant and drummer Dave Chavarri. Ex-LÄÄZ ROCKIT guitarist Ken Savich joined Illinois's SINDROME during 1991.
With the demise of the band erstwhile band members Michael Coons, Aaron Jellum, Scott Sargeant and Scott Dominguez would also turn up on the 1993 Japanese released 'Fix' album credited to GACK. Guitarist Scott Sargeant also joined WREKKING MACHINE for a tenure.
Sargeant subsequently joined KILLING CULTURE before teaming up with SKINLAB in 1998. Chavarri joined PRO-PAIN and temped for SOULFLY prior to founding ILL NINO. Another act with LÄÄZ ROCKIT connections arrived in 2000 with the formation of WARNING S.F. (actually a reincarnation of early eighties act WARNING) seeing guitarists Wayne Jellum and Jon Torres joining forces with MY VICTIM singer Torre Carstensen and OLD GRANDAD drummer Will Carroll. By August 2002 Sergeant would be revealed as working up a new project billed as MURDER LEAGUE ALL-STARS in league with the M.O.D. pairing of controversial frontman Billy Milano and Tim McMurtrie on bass.
The classic LÄÄZ ROCKIT line-up of vocalist Mike Coons, guitarists Aaron Jellum and Phil Kettner, bassist Willy Lange and Victor Agnello re-united for an appearance at the 'Dynamo Open Air' festival on 7th May 2005 in Hellendoorn, the Netherlands, by coincidence sharing the stage with reformed 80s era line-ups for both ANTHRAX and TESTAMENT.
On 9th July 2005 the band lined up at The Pound outdoor amphitheatre in San Francisco alongside TESTAMENT, VICIOUS RUMORS, DREAMS OF DAMNATION, HIRAX, AGENT STEEL, DEKAPITATOR, MUDFACE, NEIL TURBIN, BROCAS HELM and IMAGIKA for the 'Thrash Against Cancer' benefit.
In mid 2006 the world of Thrash Metal received a pleasant surprise with the announcement of a new San Francisco based collective project billed DUBLIN DEATH PATROL. (Dublin is a San Francisco suburb). This unit was assembled by a seasoned cast of veterans, featuring LÄÄZ ROCKIT's Willy Langenhuizen, comprising TESTAMENT and RAMPAGE singer Chuck Billy, former EXODUS and LEGACY vocalist Steve "Zetro" Souza, MACHINE HEAD, DEATH PENALTY, METAL WARRIOR and VIO-LENCE man Phil Demmel on guitar, guitarist Andy Billy of SACRED DOG, RAMPAGE and GUILT, RAMPAGE guitarist Greg Bustamante, OUT OF CONTROL guitarist Steve Robello, bassist John Souza and drummer Danny Cunningham.
LÄÄZ ROCKIT put in another high profile European festival show at the 'Keep It True' event at the Tauberfrankenhalle in Lauda-Königshofen, Germany on April 14th 2007 alongside British bands DIAMOND HEAD and SABBAT, fellow US outfits LETHAL and TWISTED TOWER DIRE, Denmark's ARTILLERY, Canadians CAULDRON and PILEDRIVER, Dutchmen DEFENDER and Swedish band BULLET.
New studio album 'Left For Dead', member Scott Sargeant, who also made, a guest appearance and Juan Urteaga, was delivered in July 2008 through Massacre Records.
