Biography

WW III are heralded by some, most notably DEF LEPPARD's Joe Elliott, as having made "the heaviest album of all time!" The sole 1990 album, issued ironically enough through Disney subsidiary Hollywood Records, is undoubtedly heavy but is marred by outrageously pre-pubescent lyrics. Although primarily an American project WWIII did include the hoary veteran Jimmy Bain, a man who had more than made his mark with WILD HORSES, RAINBOW and DIO.

The very first line-up included guitarist Danny Stagg, bassist Johnny B. Frank, drummer Skip Gillette and guitarist Christopher Stewart. Stagg, Stewart and Frank, together in an early alliance with drummer Matt Sorum, had all worked previously with POPULATION 5. After just a handful of gigs both Stagg and Frank joined KINGDOM COME. WW III soldiered on, drafting guitar player August Warchell and bassist Tony. However, Christopher Stewart and August Warchell then exited to form JOHNNY CRASH whilst Mandy Lion and Skip Gillette joined HELLION.

Lion returned to the idea of WW III and assembled an all new cast. For the 1990 album former FINAL NOTICE man Tracy G was enrolled. The rhythm section was completed by Vinnie Appice, a colleague of Bain's in DIO and also previously in BLACK SABBATH, AXIS and BRUZER.

Following the album release WW III toured harder than many expected on the club circuit and as support to IRON MAIDEN but ultimately found themselves with less than appreciable record sales to show for their effort. Appice drifted away, turning up once more in BLACK SABBATH for their 1992 'Dehumanizer' album, and the band struggled on with former KING DIAMOND drummer Mickey Dee.

WWIII floundered without a record deal and Dee forged a permanent relationship with MOTȪRHEAD. Lion created WICKED ALLIANCE with ex-OZZY OSBOURNE and BADLANDS guitarist JAKE E. LEE for a series of club gigs in 1994. By 1997 both Tracy G and Appice were firmly ensconced in DIO although the pair did take time out to record as yet unreleased material with UFO's Phil Mogg and Pete Way.

1999 found Lion back with Lee for a forthcoming WICKED ALLIANCE album. Bain rejoined DIO the same year. WWIII would be resurrected in 2001 for live shows with Lion, Bain and Dee joined by WARRIOR guitarist Joe Floyd. A new WW III album 'When God Turned Away' finally emerged in 2003. The band line-up for this outing stood at Lion, Moni Scaria on guitar, Rob Farr on bass and Dave DuCey on the drums. However, the actual album sessions had been cut by the singer in league with co-producer Joe Floyd on guitar, Geezer Montez on bass and Sledge on drums.

WW III seemed to have come full circle in July 2004 as the group announced their line up as seeing original WWIII members Jimmy Bain and Vinny Appice alongside singer Mandy Lion and lead guitarist Moni Scaria. This union announced the first concert from the original line up in over ten years with a special 'Metal Sludge' concert at Paladinos in Tarzana, California on 18th September. Lion would also activate THE MANDY LION BAND, this unit also seeing Moni Scaria on guitar with David DuCey on the drums.

WW III performed at the Key Club in West Hollywood, California on Saturday, 28th February 2009. The group's line-up for this show comprised Mandy Lion, Jimmy Bain, guitarist Kurt James, of STEELER, BLACK SHEEP and BLACK BART, plus drummer James Kottak, of SCORPIONS and KINGDOM COME.
