Biography
CANDY are best known for being the first port of call for guitarist GILBY CLARKE, before his adventures with KILL FOR THRILLS and GUNS N' ROSES, and contemporary singer KYLE VINCENT. The Cleveland born guitarist had actually been earlier playing with an early incarnation of BANG BANG. The Glamourous Los Angeles based CANDY also featured the founding rhythm team of Jonathan Daniel and John Schubert who went on to form New York based outfits ELECTRIC ANGELS and, latterly, THE LOVELESS. Centred on Jonathon Daniel, CANDY's music benefited from his flair for combining catchy melodies with black lyrics about subjects such as adult melancholy and ennui.
The original incarnation of CANDY saw Daniels and Schubert being joined by singer KYLE VINCENT and guitarist Geoff 'Rexx' Siegal. The concept of the band, as perceived by Daniels was to mix New York Punk with 70s British Glam. In this incarnation CANDY cut a demo, produced by none other than KIM FOWLEY, a track from which, 'Daddy Is A Jet', would be included on the compilation album 'Teenage Neon Jungle'. Following these sessions Siegal was superseded by GILBY CLARKE. The guitarist, who started playing in Hollywood at the age of 17 with the short-lived CAPONE, founded CANDY as a band with the attitude of Punk but with plenty of pop sensibilities. The group signed to Mercury Records, releasing the 'Whatever Happened To Fun' album in 1985.
Touring in support of the record CANDY were soon to part company with KYLE VINCENT and, after a fruitless search for a new frontman, was eventually replaced by Clarke, whose position on guitar was taken over by Ryan Roxie. Having parted company with Mercury, Clarke soon became frustrated at the lack of progress in finding another deal and quit to form KILL FOR THRILLS. Meantime KYLE VINCENT began carving himself out a career as a solo artist.
CANDY continued for a period with new vocalist Shane, who had been playing in a band with one Jason Nesmith. Ironically, Shane had joined Clarke's newly founded venture KILL FOR THRILLS. With Shane on vocals CANDY would soon evolve further into ELECTRIC ANGELS. Having played a minor role in KILL FOR THRILLS as backing vocalist, KYLE VINCENT finally became an artist in his own right with a solo album, self-titled at that, on Carport Records, issued in 1997. He had in fact recorded an earlier album for MCA Records in 1991 which was never released. Vincent would go on to issue further solo product and latterly guested on Gilby's 'The Hangover' solo album on backing vocals.
ELECTRIC ANGELS, featuring Shane, Ryan Roxie, Jonathan Daniel and John Schubert would, eventually gain a deal with Atlantic Records, but the partnership was relatively brief, the band believing that they didn't get a fair crack of the whip with the label. ELECTRIC ANGELS broke up after the release of a self-titled debut album produced by Tony Visconti. Shane, Daniel and Schubert stuck together to forge THE LOVELESS, releasing an internet distributed album 'A Tale Of Gin And Desperation', now worth many hundreds of dollars, in 1995.
Ryan Roxie was, like Gilby, no slouch, sessioning in New York for Sony Music Publishing, appearing on all of Clarke's solo efforts before finally landing the plum job as hired hand for ALICE COOPER's '96/'97 world tour and the subsequent 'Fistful Of Alice' album. He would then record with his own outfit DAD'S PORNO MAG in 1997 before teaming up with ex-GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash the following year. Roxie was back with ALICE COOPER for his 2000 'Brutal Planet' album.
2003 proved eventful for both Roxie and Clark, the former still operational with ALICE COOPER's band whilst Clarke hooked up with multi-platinum AOR stars HEART. With the guitarists enjoying a high profile archive CANDY sessions, comprising demos, live material and studio outtakes, surfaced billed as 'Candy - Teenage Neon Jungle' in August through Songtree Records.
During mid 2005 Ryan Roxie would make his presence felt on the soundtrack to the Horror movie 'Scarlet Fry's Junkfood Horrorfest', starring ALICE COOPER's daughter Calico. The Roxie penned track, 'Psycho Fighter', featured Roxie, ex-MÖTLEY CRÜE man John Corabi and ALICE COOPER band members bassist Chuck Garrick and drummer Tommy Clufetos.
GILBY CLARKE was in the news again in March 2006 as he revealed SUPERNOVA the brand applied to the all star band unit assembled for the second season of reality TV show 'Rock Star'. The core band comprised Clarke, MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer TOMMY LEE and former FLOTSAM AND JETSAM, METALLICA bassist and current ECHOBRAIN and VOIVOD member Jason Newsted on bass.
