Biography
Initially founded as an ad hoc jam band CAMP FREDDY, taking its title from the character of the same name in the movie 'The Italian Job', found themselves at the receiving end of a lucrative record deal. The participants all boasted an enviable pedigree, with the whole affair being fronted by Donovan Leitch, the son of 1960s Folk Rock icon Donovan and aided by the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS and JANE'S ADDICTION credited guitarist DAVE NAVARRO, former THE CULT touring bassist Billy Morrison (on guitar), bass player Scott Ford and ex-GUNS N' ROSES, THE CULT and present day VELVET REVOLVER drummer MATT SORUM. The group signed to Sanctuary Records in the Autumn of 2003. Recordings in November saw guest appearances from former ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist JERRY CANTRELL, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer Chad Smith and ex-THE CULT guitarist Billy Duffy.
The band put on a CAMP FREDDY's benefit concert for the Indian Ocean tsunami relief fund at the Key club in Hollywood on 27th January. Notable onstage guests included Slash of VELVET REVOLVER, COURTNEY LOVE, JERRY CANTRELL and STEVE JONES from the SEX PISTOLS. Another tsunami benefit held on February 18th, 'Music for Relief: Rebuilding South Asia' at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, saw guest spots from B-Real and Sen Dog of CYPRESS HILL, ROB ZOMBIE, Richard Patrick of FILTER and Gavin Rossdale of BUSH.
CAMP FREDDY's 5th August gig at the House of Blues in West Hollywood notably saw the inclusion of guests VELVET REVOLVER members Slash and Scott Weiland along with JERRY CANTRELL of ALICE IN CHAINS, David Draiman of DISTURBED and Billy Duffy of THE CULT. Also featuring on a version of THE CLASH's 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' was hotly tipped 'Rock Star INXS' star JORDIS UNGA of LIARS CLUB.
The stars would be out in force again for CAMP FREDDY's 29th September show at the Key Club in West Hollywood including ROB ZOMBIE, ex-PANTERA bassist Rex Brown, VIVIAN CAMPBELL of DEF LEPPARD, JERRY CANTRELL, ex-MARILYN MANSON guitarist John 5 and STEVE JONES of the SEX PISTOLS.
In January 2006 it would be learned that a potential "Supergroup" union, dubbed CIRCUS DIABLO, was in the works involving both Morrison and Sorum. The unit, conducting rehearsals and songwriting sessions at Drac Studios, owned by MATT SORUM, involved THE ALMIGHTY guitarist RICKY WARWICK and THE CULT guitarist Billy Duffy.
During July CAMP FREDDY donated their rendition of CHEAP TRICK's 'Surender' to the soundtrack of the movie 'Employee Of The Month'. On October 5th the band performed the same song on NBC-TV's 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno', this session including guests Slash of VELVET REVOLVER and CHEAP TRICK's own Rick Nielsen.
A press release issued in March 2007 revealed CAMP FREDDY was still working on tracks for a debut album.
CAMP FREDDY performed alongside DJ Z-Trip and artist Shepard Fairey on Tuesday, 4th November 2008 at the California Democratic Party's election night celebration at the Hyatt Century Plaza Hotel in Century City, California.
