Biography
In a Rock World inhabited by post Grunge and Pop Metal the heavily tattooed BUCKCHERRY were such a welcome breath of fresh air that the band quickly gained a foothold in the American consciousness. Both musically and image wise BUCKCHERRY harked back to the 80s with an over the top attitude and unashamedly catchy songs. The debut album soon surpassed the platinum sales mark backed up by a batch of hit singles.
Formed originally as SPARROW in 1995, the band was created by ex-SLAMHOUND singer Joshua Todd alongside guitarist Keith Nelson, bassist J.B. (Jonathan Brightman) and drummer Devon Glenn. With possible confusion looming with Sparrow Records, the act renamed themselves, with stories listing this was either after a transvestite acquaintance Buck Cherry or re-arranging the letters of Rock n' Roll legend Chuck Berry.
The Terry Date produced eponymous debut album was launched in 1999 through DreamWorks Records. Three tracks scored well on radio, 'Lit Up', 'For The Movies' and 'Check Your Head'. The band, having added second guitarist Yogi Lonich, supported LENNY KRAVITZ in the USA and KISS on their 1999 European dates. In early 2000 the group supported AC/DC. BUCKCHERRY's second album 'Time Bomb', issued in 2001, initially looked like repeating the success of the debut by arriving on the American Billboard charts at number 64.
However, BUCKCHERRY would find the going harder second time around and the John Travis produced 'Time Bomb' struggled to push past the 100'000 sales mark as the band got to grips with a nationwide club tour. In August bassist J.B. quit the band. His temporary stand in to fulfill tour dates was announced as being Josh Fleager.
BUCKCHERRY maintained their grip on their label deal into 2002 but would lose drummer Devon Glenn in January. On a more positive note BUCKCHERRY would contribute their revved up version of WILLIE NELSON's 'On The Road Again' to the NASCAR 'Crank It Up' album. Joshua Todd pulled in further valuable exposure for the band, landing an acting role in the movie 'The Salton Sea' starring Val Kilmer and MEAT LOAF. BUCKCHERRY members Josh Todd and Keith Nelson joined the ex-GUNS N' ROSES collective of Slash, DUFF McKAGAN and Matt Sorum for a set at the Los Angeles Key club on April 29th as a part of tribute concert for the late OZZY OSBOURNE and MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Randy Castillo. As if the band line-up alone was not enough Steven Tyler of AEROSMITH joined the ad hoc band onstage for an encore of 'Mama Kin'. Subsequent reports linked Todd to a proposed band union with the GUNS N' ROSES personnel but this was later refuted.
With Todd splitting away from the group BUCKCHERRY folded in July. However, 'Crushed' posthumously found inclusion on the soundtrack to the 2002 groupie movie 'The Banger Sisters' starring Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarondon.
Joshua Todd wasted little time in debuting his new act SHOTS FIRED at the Cat Club in Hollywood in September. Guitarist Yogi joined THE WALLFLOWERS for touring. By April of 2003 Todd had announced completion of a solo album 'You Made Me'. Meantime, early 2004 saw the launch of GLORYHOLE U.K., a new band unit established by Keith Nelson and WARRANT drummer Mike Fasano.
Singer Josh Todd and guitarist Keith Nelson announced they were to reform BUCKCHERRY in January 2005. Drafted for bass duties on new recordings would be IZZY STRADLIN band member Jimmy Ashurst. Todd would also be found collaborating with GUNS N' ROSES keyboard player Dizzy Reed recording music for the movie soundtrack 'Still Life'.
On 5th August BUCKCHERRY, opening for Souther Rockers MOLLY HATCHET, performed a "secret" club show at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, California under the name THE CHERRY BROTHERS. This was BUCKCHERRY's first show with their new line- up comprising Josh Todd, guitarists Keith Nelson and Stevie D., bassist Jimmy Ashhurst and drummer Xavier Muriel. Live work saw the band confirmed for Japan's 'Summer Sonic' festivals in Tokyo and Osaka, ranked alongside SLIPKNOT, NINE INCH NAILS and DEEP PURPLE. The band put in a one off show on September 22nd at Johnny Depp's Viper Room in West Hollywood, California under the assumed name ALL LIT UP with support from THE CHELSEA SMILES. The group returned to Japan in November for headline gigs that led into supports to MÖTLEY CRÜE in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Osaka and Fukuoka.
BUCKCHERRY's 'Fifteen' album saw release on Eleven Seven Music in the USA in April 2006, shifting over 26,000 copies in its first week of release to debut at number 48 on the Billboard chart. This success, and the high radio profile of single 'Crazy Bitch', soon resulted in the group signing up to major label Atlantic records, this deal announced on May 10th. The album continued to sell due to the strong media presence of 'Crazy Bitch's controversial lyrical content and X rated video. In June '15' was selling progressively more copies each week as following single 'Next 2 You' began to impact. By August '15' had strengthened its position, rising to number 41. The album would still be hanging in the Billboard top 100 in October.
'Crazy Bitch' stoked further controversy when the video was pulled from circulation. An underage girl, who had featured in the video after being recruited for the session by a request for extras posted at the band's MySpace page, sued the band, claiming she was coerced into taking her top off and dancing provocatively in the clip. BUCKCHERRY subsequently shot a second version of the video.
BUCKCHERRY's debut saw a re-issue on October 31st as a CD/DVD package, adding two album outtakes, 'Late Nights In Voodoo' and 'Fastback 69', plus promotional videos for 'Lit Up', 'Check Your Head', 'Dead Again' and 'For The Movies', plus concert footage of three performances taped in Los Angeles. '15' was certified gold status by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipments in excess of 500,000 copies in mid October.
In December BUCKCHERRY's hit single 'Crazy Bitch' earned a Grammy nomination from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in the category of "Best Hard Rock Performance". By this point the track had been downloaded over a million times for ringtones and had been played over six million times on the band's Myspace page. Another round of US touring, alongside 3 DAYS GRACE, was announced for January 2007.
Summer US dates had the group packaged with PAPA ROACH and . That August the band marked a major milestone this week as the ringtone their blockbuster hit 'Crazy Bitch' celebrated a full year in the Nielsen Ringscan Top 30 - the only track to do so in the chart's history.
The band found itself on the receiving end of some unpleasant media reporting when a fan impaled himself at a concert in York, Pennsylvania. The man had tried to climb a 12-foot, wrought-iron fence but had fell onto inch thick spikes, one of which penetrated through his thigh. Firefighters used hydraulic cutters to free him.
BUCKCHERRY performed its 300th live show in support of the '15' album, which had remained lodged on the US charts for 82 weeks, on December 15th at Las Vegas' House of Blues. On November 20th the band released an MVI edition of '15', as a PC and MAC-compatible DVD featuring the album audio, downloadable files for each song, previously unreleased live tracks 'Everything', 'Next 2 You' and 'Crazy Bitch', promotional videos plus U-Myx, which allowed fans to create their own custom remixes of 'Crazy Bitch' and 'Everything', plus a variety of digital extras such as ringtones, screen savers, buddy icons and wallpapers.
The hugely anticipated 'Black Butterfly' album, co-produced by Marti Frederiksen and Keith Nelson, arrived in September 2008. It was preceded by an unofficial internet leak in July of the first single 'Too Drunk...' That same month BUCKCHERRY set out on a massive US 'Crüe Fest' tour flanking MÖTLEY CRÜE, PAPA ROACH and SIXX:A.M. Subsequent headline shows in September saw AVENGED SEVENFOLD supporting. These shows proved so successful the run was extended into early December, adding SHINEDOWN and SAVING ABEL as support.
In September 2009 BUCKCHERRY supported KISS across North America.
