Biography
Created in Los Angeles in March 1990, BLIND MELON signed to Capitol after showcasing for the label, almost immediately relocating to Durham, North Carolina. The band had come to the attention of labels after vocalist Shannon Hoon had sung back-up vocals on the GUNS N' ROSES track 'Don't Cry'. Hoon, a friend of fellow Lafayette, Indiana native GUNS N'ROSES vocalist Axl Rose, also appeared in the video.
individual members of BLIND MELON had originally found themselves in Los Angeles seeking their fortunes Guitarist Roger Stevens and bassist Brad Smith had teamed up with Shannon Hoon to begin writing together, soon adding Christopher Thorn on second guitar. After a long search for the perfect drummer, Stevens and Smith finally called their buddy Glen Graham back home in Mississippi.
The band's debut album was produced by Rick Parasher, secured by the band after being impressed with the TEMPLE OF THE DOG album the man had also produced. Road work in North America saw BLIND MELON touring in the fall of 1991 with SOUNDGARDEN before opening up on the three band MTV 120 Minutes bill featuring PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED and BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE II.
BLIND MELON worked hard, hitting the road in the spring of 1992 and subsequently playing with the likes of OZZY OSBOURNE, ALICE IN CHAINS and NEIL YOUNG. They also opened for GUNS N' ROSES European Stadium tour during 1993 and LENNY KRAVITZ's UK December dates that year.
Hoon died from a drug overdose in October 1995.
Smith and Thorn allied themselves with former PEARL JAM and CANDLEBOX drummer Dave Krusen for a new act titled UNIFIED THEORY in 2000. Vocals were handled by Canadian ex-CELIA GREEN man Chris Shinn. During 2005 Stevens announced THE TENDER TRIO in union with SPACEHOG singer Royston Langdon and Rene Lopez.
In October 2006 the group's surviving members, guitarists Christopher Thorn and Rogers Stevens, bassist Brad Smith and drummer Glen Graham, got back together again under the BLIND MELON banner, with a new singer, 25-year-old Amarillo, Texas, native Travis Warren.
