Biography
S&M fanatic Betsy Weiss was previously fronting Los Angeles Ska band THE BOXING BOYS before discovering the delights of Heavy Metal and carving out a niche in American Metal history for herself as front woman with the notorious BITCH. The original line-up of the band featured Betsy, erstwhile BADAXE guitarist David Carruth, bassist Richard Zusman and drummer Robby Settles. This incarnation recorded the first BITCH demo, from which they contributed the semi-classic 'Live For The Whip' for the first 'Metal Massacre' compilation album issued by Metal Blade in 1982, signing a deal with the label soon afterwards.
Prior to the recording of the band's 'Damnation Alley' mini-album, Zusman was replaced by former MOLTEN LEATHER bassist Mark Anthony Webb. MOLTEN LEATHER had been a featured act on the second 'Metal Massacre' volume released in late '82. 'Riding In Thunder', a track to be featured on BITCH's first full blown album, 'Be My Slave', was one of the tracks chosen for inclusion on 1983's 'Metal Massacre III'. In late 1983 bassist Mark Webb departed, his position being filled by Ron Cordy, previously with fellow Los Angeles act OVERKILL.
BITCH's onstage S&M antics, which included the ritual humiliation of a male slave by Betsy, soon garnered the attention of Los Angeles club goers and the world's press. Unfortunately the band's progress was stalled by management hassles, delaying the next record by some four years. 1987's 'The Bitch Is Back, titled after the ELTON JOHN cover song, was delivered just a little too late.
In order to pursue a more commercial direction BITCH changed their name in favour of their lead vocalist's, recording a self-titled album under the BETSY handle for Metal Blade in 1988. A BITCH odds n' sods album was issued by Metal Blade in 1989 featuring a selection of unreleased and remixed tracks, including 'Walls Of Love' from the then forthcoming, but eventually never released, BET-Z project.
BITCH announced a return in late 1998 with Betsy, Carruth and Settles joined by fresh members guitarist Edward Paul and bassist Robert Farr. The band apparently reformed yet again including original BITCH personnel Robby Settlesand David Carruth during late 2002 and new bass player John Zell, announcing appearances in Germany for the summer of 2003. BITCH undertook a series of Californian club gigs in April as a warm up to their European jaunt.
Betsy joined the ranks of re-activated Heavy Metal band WITCH in October 2008.
