Biography
At their launch, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES delivered a new sound from some seasoned professionals. However, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES contemporary sleaze belied their 80s Glam Rock roots. Founded by erstwhile BULLETBOYS guitarist D.J. Ashba in September 1999 the band would evolve rapidly through an array of line-ups. Vocalist Joe Leste had pedigree with noted Rockers BANG TANGO, but had quit that band to join L.A. GUNS. Within weeks he would rejoin BANG TANGO but the singer was soon out again forging a new band with Ashba, ex-L.A. GUNS bassist Chuck Garrick, FASTER PUSSYCAT's guitarist Brent Muscat and ex-SHAKE THE FAITH drummer Danny Parker. This unit collapsed when Garrick joined DIO and reinvented itself as BEAUTIFUL CREATURES.
Muscat would form BUBBLE before joining L.A. GUNS then hooking back up with FASTER PUSSYCAT. Leste and Ashba re-grouped with another ex-SHAKE THE FAITH and WICKED JESTER man bassist Kenny Kweens and former TOMMI GUNN, JONES STREET and ALICE COOPER drummer Anthony Focx. The latter would switch instruments to become a rhythm guitarist. Focx had also scored celluloid credits in the movie 'Wayne's World', appearing as the drummer in Tia Carrere's club band.
The band's debut live showing would be at the Dragonfly club in Los Angeles. Glen Sobel, whose credits include stints with guitar virtuosos TONY McALPINE and IMPELLITERRI as well as Canadian Pomp Rockers SAGA, would eventually take the drumming position.
The band did actually switch names briefly to HELLSTAR in late 2000 but soon reverted back to BEAUTIFUL CREATURES. Initially the band saw the inclusion of Swedish rhythm guitarist 'Hot' Rod Teilmann, previously a member of THE JET SET. Teilmann's tenure, lasting just over six weeks, was cut short though as his visa expired. Teilmann subsequently returned to the fore with Stockholm based Glam act GEMINI FIVE. The act signed to Warner Bros. for their Sean Beavan produced debut. Japanese versions of the album included two bonus tracks, 'Get Up' and an acoustic take of '1 A.M.'.
BEAUTIFUL CREATURES garnered valuable public exposure with their track '1 A.M.' included as part of the 'Valentine' movie soundtrack and further as part of the 2001 American Ozzfest dates. However, hard album sales would prove harder to attain and the band was duly let go by Warner Bros. in early 2002. Guitarist DJ Ashba would quit shortly after. In February former ENGINES OF AGGRESSION and TUFF guitarist Michael Thomas plugged the gap.
Joe Leste would put in a further tribute album appearance, fronting up a version of 'Mr. Brownstone' on an April Deadline Records GUNS N' ROSES collection. By the summer of 2002 it seemed as though it was all over for the band. DJ Ashba resurfaced in September with a fresh act modestly titled simply DJ ASHBA also comprising of erstwhile AMERICAN PEARL bass player Rodney Rocha, rhythm guitarist Dave "Skeeter" Marr and ex-SINOMATIC drummer Matt Muckle. The guitarist had been asked to join up with the BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION supergroup led by MȪTLEY CRÜE personnel bassist Nikki Sixx and guitarist John Corabi plus L.A. GUNS man Tracii Guns but had declined the offer.
BEAUTIFUL CREATURES did in fact perevere but guitarist Michael Thomas quit in April of 2003. By May the ex-members saga had resolved itself with the band ASHBA, this act incorporating guitarists DJ Ashba and Michael Thomas with bass player John Younger and drummer Bones Elias. Surprising many, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES would still be a going concern in 2003, inducting new guitarist Alex Grossi then replacing Glen Sobel with Matt Starr. Both Grossi and Starr would also be active members of FASTMASTER. Signing to the Japanese JVC Victor label in July BEAUTIFUL CREATURES cut a James Book produced album 'Deuce'.
2004 found both Alex Grossi and Matt Starr working with HOOKERS 'N' BLOW, the live side act of GUNS N' ROSES keyboard player Dizzy Reed also including Curtis Roach of FASTMASTER along with drummer Troy Patrick Farrell of the GILBY CLARKE band and MIKE TRAMP's touring act.
In May of 2004 ex-guitarist Michael Thomas joined ADLER'S APPETITE, the band founded by ex-GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler. The 'Deuce' album finally emerged in Japan in April 2005, subsequently being picked up by Spitfire Records for US release. However, the North American variant would see a marked difference to the Japanese original, having all of Alex Grossi's guitar parts re-recorded. Grossi would jump ship to join QUIET RIOT. That July, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES would be joined by second guitarist Mark Simpson, a veteran of FLOTSAM AND JETSAM and LYNCH MOB. US tour dates were projected in union with the GENITORTURERS. Meantime, ex-drummer Glen Sobel joined up with the reformed SHARK ISLAND to record their comeback album 'Gathering Of The Faithful'.
Joe Leste toured in February 2006 with a version of BANG TANGO alongside STEPHEN PEARCY and PRETTY BOY FLOYD. Involved in this line-up on guitar would be his BEAUTIFUL CREATURES sidekick Mark Simpson. Meantime, ex-guitarist Alex Grossi hooked up with LOVE/HATE for European tour dates in April. That same month BEAUTIFUL CREATURES announced UK dates partnered again with STEPHEN PEARCY.
In early 2007 Anthony Focx scored credits on the other side of the desk, mixing new tracks by AEROSMITH, BRAND NEW SIN and 'American Idol' finalist KATHERINE MCPHEE. Focx also activated new band outfit GENERATION BEAUTIFUL with female singer Shelby Goff, lead guitarist Fred Nilsson, drummer Jerry Vidal, and bassist Jamie Zimlin.
Guitarist DJ Ashba joined the ranks of GUNS N' ROSES on 21st March 2009. BEAUTIFUL CREATURES evolved further in June, shedding Alex Grossi and Timmy Russell, adding guitarist Delta Starr, of CULTURE KILLERS, and drummer Justin Sandler.
Kenny Kweens joined the Phil Lewis versions of L.A. GUNS in July 2009.
