Biography

Hardcore act that steadily introduced Country elements into their sound to eventually break into the American charts after 18 years. SOCIAL DISTORTION was founded in 1978 by vocalist Rik Agnew, guitarist Mike Ness, bassist Frank Agnew and drummer Casey Royer. As both Agnew brothers left the fold in 1979 to forge the ADOLESCENTS Ness took over lead vocals and drafted bassist Dennis Danell and drummer Carrott.

SOCIAL DISTORTION's debut came with the 'Mainliner' single on Posh Boy Records in 1981. The band then created their own label 13th Floor for follow up EP's and the 'Mommy's Little Monster' album. The band line-up shifted again with Dannel moving to guitar and Brent Liles taking the bass position. D.I.'s Derek O'Brien was now on the drum stool.

The album garnered praise for it's alliance of aggression and melody but behind the scenes Ness was coping with a drug problem. SOCIAL DISTORTION went into hiatus as Ness checked himself into a rehabilitation clinic. O'Brien resumed activities with D.I. whilst Liles teamed up with AGENT ORANGE.

SOCIAL DISTORTION returned in 1988 with a recovered Ness in union with John Maurer on bass and ex-LEWD man Chris Reece on drums for the 1989 album 'Prison Bound'. The band's new Hard Country sound found favour with major label Epic. 1992's 'Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell' gave the band their first chart showing in America as the band toured with the RAMONES.

Former BLACK FLAG and DANZIG drummer Chuck Biscuits supplanted Reece prior to SOCIAL DISTORTION's highest chart showing with the 1996 album 'White Light, White Heat, White Trash'. In keeping with their developing R&B sound the album included another version of the ROLLING STONES classic 'Under My Thumb'.

SOCIAL DISTORTION appeared as part of the 1997 'Vans warped' tour. MIKE NESS also pursued a solo career delving into a Country Blues sound with 'Cheating At Solitaire' and 'Under The Influences'. Sadly, Danell died in February 2000 of natural courses, he was only 38.

SOCIAL DISTORTION began recording of a new album in 2000 enlisting former BOB DYLAN and IZZY STRADLIN' drummer Charlie Quintana and guitarist Johnny Wickersham. A nationwide US tour throughout February and March of 2005 saw Swedish sleaze merchants BACKYARD BABIES as opening act.
