Biography

The ENID, led by mainstay Robert John Godfrey, were an eclectic amalgam of Progressive Rock and Punk attitude. Godfrey's career had begun with his 1973 solo album 'The Fall Of Hypereion' for Charisma Records.

The debut line up of the band found Godfrey working with bassist David Williams, keyboard player Glen Tollet, drummer David Storey and keyboard player Nick Magnus. Williams was soon replaced with Neil Kavanagh.

The 1976 ENID line-up comprised of Godfrey, former PAVANQ guitarist Stephan Stewart, guitarist Francis Lickerish, Tollet, Dobson and Kavanagh The later quit in 1976 eventually founding GUNHILL.

Later members included bassist Martin Russell, drummer Grant Gilmore and keyboardist William Gilmore. These three later left to form CRAFT.

The band split after financial constraints forced the closure of their label Pye, but a radio broadcast on Tommy Vance's Radio One show of their Hammersmith gig incited such interest that the band reformed to issue a string of self financed albums. The band regularly sold out gigs and issued their own newspaper 'The Enid' which directly attacked major record companies for "hyping" bands.

With each consecutive release the ENID became more New Age and their development was appreciated by a loyal hardcore cult following. The 1983 release of 'In The Region Of The Summer Stars' is a complete re-recording of their debut.

Godfrey contributed keyboards to Halifax Gothic Metal band PARADISE LOST's 1992 album 'Shades Of God'.

THE ENID were still a going concern in 1996 and the album released that year, 'Sundialer', features former TAMARISK, QUASAR, DAGABAND and JADIS guitarist Nick May, bassist Alex Tsertides and drummer Steve Hughes.

The 1999 album 'Tears Of The Sun' is a compilation of older material with one new track.
