Biography

Swansea Rock act WILD TURKEY received media attention for the inclusion of former JETHRO TULL man Glenn Cornick. The band's history is intricately linked with that of Welsh Progressive Rockers MAN. Cornick (real name Glenn Douglas Barnard) had appeared on the first three JETHRO TULL albums, 'This Was' in 1968, 'Stand Up' in 1969 and 'Benefit' in 1970, and previous to that groundbreaking act had wound his way up through the musical rankings with THE VIKINGS, FORMULA ONE, THE HOBOS and THE EXECUTIVES among others.

Frontman Gary Pickford-Hopkins had been involved with BIG SLEEP, ANCIENT GREASE and EYES OF BLUE. Installed on guitar would be Jon Blackmore and Graham Williams. Another BIG SLEEP member drummer John Weather was involved in the group's pre-recording days but would leave for the GRAHAM BOND ORGANISATION, GENTLE GIANT then MAN. His place was taken by Jeff Jones, coincidentally an erstwhile member of MAN. Another membership casualty would be Graham Williams, who also opted out prior to recording. Filling the position was the teenage guitar protege Alan 'Tweke' Lewis.

Following 1971's Rodger Bain and Tom Allom produced 'Battle Hymn' album, recorded at Olympic Studios, guitarist Jon Blackmore quit and WILD TURKEY drafted keyboard player Steve Gurl and guitarist Mick Dyche. WILD TURKEY scored the support to BLACK SABBATH's January 1972 UK dates then furthered this relationship by retaining the opening slot for subsequent US dates throughout the summer. This paid off as 'Battle Hymn' dented the lower reaches of the US charts. WILD TURKEY returned to America to maintain the impetus, performing alongside ZZ TOP, TEN YEARS AFTER, YES, PROCUL HARUM and even JETHRO TULL.

The group, having inducted new guitarist Mick Dyche, utilised engineer Robin Black to cut their second album at London's Morgan Studios. The resulting 'Turkey' saw issue in September 1972. Steve Gurl, up until then a band roadie, had provided keyboards for these sessions to such effect he was invited to join the band as an official member. Live work ensued but in the spring of 1973 Tweke Lewis exited in order to join MAN. For a brief period WILD TURKEY persevered with Dyche assuming sole guitar responsibilities. Eventually UFO guitarist BERNIE MARSDEN made up the numbers. This version of the band cut a BBC radio session on October 12th 1973.

Jeff Jones took his leave was was replaced by former SUPERTRAMP drummer Kevin Currie. In this guise the group entered The Farmyard in Little Chalfont to record five demo songs, with production credits going to VINEGAR JOE guitarist Pete Gage, during early 1974. A name change, to PSI, was suggested but rejected. During this period Pickford-Hopkins was invited by YES keyboard maestro RICK WAKEMAN to feature as lead vocalist on his grandiose concept album 'Journey To The Centre Of The Earth'. When this record hit number 1 in the UK the singer was enticed away to join Wakeman's band on a full-time basis, next appearing on the 1975 epic 'The Myths Of King Arthur...' album.

Unfortunately the band folded following a farewell London Marquee show. Gurl and Marsden both joined BABE RUTH, after which the guitarist found fame with WHITESNAKE. Cornick journeyed to Germany to create the influential KATHARGO. He later joined PARIS. Dyche would join SNIPS then SNIFF N' THE TEARS. Dyche and Gurl would reunite in 1978 in the MICKY JONES BAND. Pickford-Hopkins issued a solo single, '(Why) The Song', in 1987.

Cornick reformed WILD TURKEY for the 1996 album 'Stealer Of Years', recorded at Digitaff Studios in Wales for HTD Records. Joining him were Pickford-Hopkins, Lewis and drummer Brian Thomas. The band played a clutch of concerts in England and Germany to promote the album but were waylaid when a major setback occurred when Glenn Cornick suffered a heart attack. Thankfully, Glenn was soon back to full health and resumed action for German shows in March.

In 2006 the members of WILD TURKEY, Glenn Cornick, Gary Pickford-Hopkins, Graham Williams and Brian Thomas resolved to reform once again. Wildturkeymusic Ltd issued fourth album 'You And Me In The Jungle' in October that same year. Former JETHRO TULL drummer Clive Bunker guested as did ex-WILD TURKEY men Mick Dyche and Steve Gurl.
