Biography

Breaking away from SAXON in 1994, guitarist GRAHAM OLIVER reunited with another SAXON founder member in bassist Steve Dawson to form SON OF A BITCH. The name was actually taken with a purpose as it was the original pre-recording name of SAXON. Additional recruits to the band were former SAXON and MOTÖRHEAD drummer Pete Gill and American frontman Ted Bullet, previously with THUNDERHEAD.

A lengthy legal battle ensued whereby both parties laid claim to the name SAXON, but an initial judgement was made in favour of original vocalist Biff Byford. By 1998 SON OF A BITCH toured South America, unfortunately billed by many promoters as SAXON, as the legal battle for the name raged. For these shows the band introduced Haydn Conway, previously with SARACEN as second guitarist.

In 1998 Bullet, who had been fighting a losing battle with alcohol, was replaced for live work by ex-GONADS vocalist Kev Moore. The band also replaced Gill with another ex-SAXON member Nigel Durham.

Early 1999 found SON OF A BITCH on the live circuit billed rather awkwardly as GRAHAM OLIVER AND STEVE DAWSON PLAY THE GREATEST HITS OF SAXON. However, much to their dismay most promoters simply billed them as SAXON.

A new album was being made ready for 1999 release but was put on hold. Oliver teamed up with his son on drums to forge a JIMI HENDRIX tribute band for live work before creating the LUTHER BELTZ BAND with ex members of WITCHFYNDE and STORMWATCH. This effort was shortlived. Bullitt meanwhile reformed THUNDERHEAD for a European tour in October alongside METAL CHURCH.

2000 found SON OF A BITCH retitled OLIVER/DAWSON SAXON, with new frontman ex HURRICANE, MADAM X and SHY vocalist John Ward, as the legal dispute over the name rolled on. OLIVER/DAWSON SAXON released a live album 'Re: Landed' in late 2000.

The 'Victim You' album would see a re-issue in 2001 on Angel Air Records complete with extra live material. GRAHAM OLIVER issued a solo album in 2001 'End Of An Era' which saw contributions from both Gill and Dawson.
