Biography
Being fronted by a skinhead lesbian singer London's SKUNK ANANSIE were only ever going to make a severe impact upon the British Rock scene. Fortunately, behind the striking image Skin possessed an almighty vocal talent and had a band of aggro Rockers skilled enough to craft memorable yet hard tunes to back it up.
The initial 1994 line up comprised of Skin (real name Deborah Dyer), guitarist Ace (real name Martin Kent), bassist Cass Lewis (real name Richard Lewis) and ex UFO and DIAMOND HEAD drummer Robbie France. Both Skin and Cass had been members of MAMA'S WILD whilst Ace was involved with THE SCREAMING AMEOBAS. Lewis had also worked on an aborted band project with DURAN DURAN guitarist ANDY TAYLOR as well as having been a member of DARK CITY. Gelling as SKUNK ANANSIE the band was signed after just two gigs. The band debuted with a mail order only single 'Little Baby Swastikkka' culled from a Radio One session.
SKUNK ANANSIE's inaugural official outing 'Selling Jesus' put the band straight into the charts where they remained for each successive release. Further chart action followed with 'I Can Dream' and 'Charity' steadily pushing their sales figures higher.
France was replaced by the temporary figure of Louis on drums. Intensive live work supporting THERAPY? and LENNY KRAVITZ to back up the single releases propelled the Sylvia Massey produced debut album 'Paranoid And Sunburnt' straight into the British top ten. SKUNK ANANSIE also backed label mate BJORK on her 'Army Of Me' single. The band's fourth single, the radical power ballad 'Weak' put them into the top twenty and secured massive radio play prompting a re-release of 'Charity'.
1996's Garth Richardson produced 'Stoosh' record was another big seller and SKUNK ANANSIE's singles were now regulars in the higher end of the charts. Drums for the album were now in the hands of Mark Richardson previously with LITTLE ANGELS and B.L.O.W. Skin and Ace would be chosen by BLACK SABBATH guitarist TONY IOMMI to feature as guest vocalist on his 'Iommi' album, the pair making their mark on the cut 'Meat'. Live work to close of 1997 witnessed sell out gigs in Durban and Johannesburg, South Africa.
The 1999 Andy Wallace produced 'Post Orgasmic Chill' album, preceded by the hit single 'Charlie Big Potato', delivered a further hit. 'Charlie Big Potato' also made an impression in the hit movie 'Hollow Man', the film's villian portrayed by Kevin Bacon singing along to the track on his car radio. Live work was preceded by a brace of "secret" gigs billed as S.C.A.M (Skin, Cass, Ace, Mark) at Glasgow's King Tut's Wah Wah Club in early May before the band got its teeth into an extensive round of European festivals such as Denmark's 'Roskilde', the Dutch 'Pinkpop' and Germany's 'Rock Am Ring'. SKUNK ANANSIE's status in their homeland was confirmed with a headline appearance at the Glastonbury festival in July. Second single 'Secretly' was given a boost by its inclusion in the film 'Cruel Intentions' starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Skin would also turn up on SEVENDUST's 'Home' album as guesting vocalist on the track 'Licking Cream'. Touring saw the band closing out the year with a gig at 'The Gathering' festival in New Zealand upfront of gigs in Japan, Germany and Portugal.
A rash of outside projects kept individual band members occupied. Mark Richardson undertook session drumming for DOLLSHEAD. Other outside projects found Skin donating 'You Can't Find Peace' to the German film 'Der Krieger und die Kaiserin', the song ''Carmen Queasy' on THE PRODIGY man MAXIM REALITY's solo album and 'Stagioni d' Amore' for the Italian remake of the musical 'Rent'. A further Italian connection came with Skin's duet with the band MARLENE KUNTZ, featuring on the song 'La Canzone Che Scrivo Per Te'.
Despite a strong upward curve in the band's career SKUNK ANANSIE, having racked up combined album sales in excess of four million, was to splinter during April 2001. By 2002 bassist Cass Lewis was working as part of legendary Rock guitarist GARY MOORE's band. The bassist would also session on SKIN's solo album due for release in late 2002. Amongst other guests on the erstwhile SKUNK ANANSIE frontwoman's debut would be ELBOW drummer Richard Jupp, LENNY KRAVITZ band guitarist Craig Ross and drummer Gail Ann Dorsey from DAVID BOWIE's band.
Guitarist ACE too would get in on the solo action, recording an album 'Still Hungry?' with such esteemed guests as MOTÖRHEAD's Lemmy Kilmister, ONE MINUTE SILENCE's Brian Barry and Benji of SKINDRED.
A reunited SKUNK ANANSIE played two low-key shows at London's Water Rats venue on 2nd and 3rd April 2009 under the pseudonym S.C.A.M., a combination of the first-name initials of the four band members. The band undertook the 'Greatest Hits' tour of Europe throughout November.
