Biography
Ex-IRON MAIDEN frontman Paul Dianno stretched his wings musically following the demise of his Metal band KILLERS. The self titled 1997 album features a varied display of not too familiar with Dianno's previous fare. The latter five live tracks were recorded at London's now defunct Marquee Club.
For the 1998 effort Dianno pulled in former GARY MOORE drummer Gary Ferguson, ex-RAINBOW and MIDNIGHT BLUE singer Dougie White on session vocals, SAXON's rhythm section of bassist Tim Carter and Nigel Glockler. Guitars were supplied by GIRLSCHOOL's Kim McAullife, ex-FASTWAY, DESTROYER and YA YA man LEA HART, FM's Andy Barnett and Ewan Salt. By this stage Lea Hart had in fact taken over the role of artist manager for Paul too.
Billed as DIANNO once more the singer cut a 2000 album recorded in Brazil with Brazilian musicians entitled 'Nomad'. Featured musicians included the KARMA duo of keyboard player Fabrizio Di Sarno and guitarist Chico Dehira. The undeniable quality of the 'Nomad' record reaped justifiable critical acclaim worldwide.
Under yet another new title of PAUL DIANNO AND THE BEAST the man issued 'The Beast Live' culled from his South American live dates of 2000. The album contained solely IRON MAIDEN numbers. Dianno would crop up as a guest session vocalist on the 2001 'Longevity' album issued by German Gothic Metal band RE VISION. He would also lend his vocals to 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' and 'Master Of Puppets' for a Perris Records METALLICA tribute album.
The man published a no holds barred autobiography in June 2002 titled 'The Beast' which generated major publicity. Amongst its many revelations was that Dianno had converted to the Muslim faith. Buoyed by the success of the book Dianno's band put in his first London gig in over five years, appearing in October at the Underworld venue alongside ZODIAC MINDWARP & THE LOVE REACTION. Dates upfront of this gig found the man touring in Canada and Italy. Further shows throughout October and into December saw the man playing shows in Mexico and Sweden. The new year found Dianno and band, Marcus Thurston, Pete Newdeck, Darius Kaye and Cliff Evans, performing in India. Whilst there, the singer even signed up for an acting role in a Bollywood movie.
The singer was set to work on an album of IRON MAIDEN acoustic numbers for mid 2003. Canadian dates projected for that summer saw Dianno working with the all female violin trio WRATH CHILDREN. However, with just days to go the entire tour was scrapped. Nevertheless, a run of Mexican shows was subsequently announced for July and European dates in October had the man hooked up with former AMERICAN DOG and New York's BRAIN SURGEONS. That same year the singer oddly united with Italian IRON MAIDEN tribute band CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED for a series of shows. October shows in Europe would be scheduled in alliance with NWoBHM vets GIRLSCHOOL and TYGERS OF PAN TANG. Changing tack once more, the singer announced he was to be backed by a band unit called SCREAMING MONKEY, actually former members of CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED, for European and Scandinavian gigs in November and December.
Dianno announced he was searching for new band members in August of 2004. Although this statement came from Dianno's management it would be denied a matter of days later, the singer claiming he was sticking with the musicians from SCREAMING MONKEY. December found Dianno undertaking a short burst of dates in Finland. A one off band would back the singer for his appearance at the 'Sirkkelirock Metal Awards' on 8th January 2005 at the Tavastia club in Helsinki, Finland. Musicians included Markus Vanhala of OMNIUM GATHERUM, GORE PENETRATION, MALPRACTICE and MANITOU on guitar, Antti Laurén from MANITOU on second guitar, Ismo Laukkanen of MANITOU on bass and Kalle Kukkonen of KAIHORO on the drums. Swedish gigs in January found Dianno backed by musicians from BURNING ENGINES. Tour work continued apace throughout the year, including a lengthy stretch of Russian dates in October.
On the recording front, the singer also lent vocals to a version of NAZARETH's 'Hair Of The Dog' included on the MICHAEL SCHENKER 'Heavy Hitters' covers album. Dianno also guested on the 2005 album 'Area 605' from Swedish Rockers SPEARFISH.
European 2005 dates, commencing in Russia during September, saw Dianno employing an all Swedish band comprising BURNING ENGINES guitarists Mikael Fässberg and Staffan Ȫsterlind, JET BLACK COMBO bassist Andreas Grufstedt and DEBASE drummer Johan Helgesson. On the recording front Dianno cut five new tracks as a soundtrack to the comic book 'Jenna' through Narwain Publishing. The comic / CD combination would be limited to just 1000 copies.
A new studio album for May 2006 through Cleopatra Records in the USA, 'The Living Dead' recorded in Argentina, London and Brazil, featured an array of musicians. Guitars came courtesy of Paulo Turin of GANGLAND and BATTLEZONE, Chico Dehira of KARMA, Javier Cuevas of JERIKO and Claudio Duliba from RETROSATAN and JERIKO, bass by Felipe Andreoli of KARMA and Marcelo Bracalente of JERIKO with drums donated by ANGRA's Aquiles Priester and the GRITO MORTAL and JERIKO credited Germa¡n Rodriguez.
In June Dianno issued an extremely limited edition album, 'The Classics: The Maiden Years', through Wild World Productions. Hosting 2006 re-recordings of IRON MAIDEN songs the album was only available through his official website and restricted to just 150 copies. The singer also featured on the VAN HALEN song 'Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love' included on the tribute album '80s Metal Tribute To Van Halen' released by Deadline Records in September 2006. Polish dates in November would be supported by THE CHAINSAW.
Dianno entered the studio with German producer Deiter Roth in mid 2008 prior to South American 'Latin Assault' tour dates in October. As his backing band the singer used members of the DEAD ZONE band from Paraguay, featuring Didier, Dany, Cristian and Paolo. The following month Dianno revealed US dates, his first in over 15 years. In a novel twist in late 2008 the IRON MAIDENS: IRON MAIDEN TRIBUTE band united with Dianno to act as his backing band for two shows in California on 26th December at the San Juan Capistrano Coach House and the following evening at Redondo Beach's Brixton venue.
A 2009 Auckland, New Zealand show was supported by WORLD WAR FOUR. European dates saw Dianno utilising Swedish guitarist Rasmus Ehrnborn.
