Biography

A Northampton based Heavy Metal band, SOLDIER's original line up included. The original formation of the band comprised lead vocalist Gary Phillips, guitarists Ian Dick and Al Cannam, bass player Ram Tiwary and drummer Steve Garner. In September of 1980 guitarist Nick Bicknell and bassist Steve Barlow from DEATH TRAP superseded Cannam and Tiwary. Another change saw Ian Astrop taking command of the drum stool. With this line up SOLDIER contributed the track 'Storm Of Steel' to the 'Heavy Metal Heroes' compilation album in 1981.

Ian Dick was replaced by ex-ALIEN HEAT man Nick Bicknell. SOLDIER followed this up with the 'Sheralee' single, recorded in October of 1981 but Bicknell was to decamp the following March. SOLDIER then enrolled guitarist Nick Lashley. However, bassist Steve Barlow quit in early 1983 to be replaced by former GASKIN man Mark McKenzie, although a planned album, tentatively titled 'Infantrycide', never appeared due to disagreements with record company over the proposed budget.

Undaunted, SOLDIER released the live cassette 'Live Forces' before vocalist Gary Phillips departed and in came GIRL vocalist PHIL LEWIS. Demos were recorded with this line up but Lewis soon departed, eventually relocating to Los Angeles and fronting L.A. GUNS.

SOLDIER folded and Bicknell joined Rock Pop act GEMS. Lashley journeyed on to enjoy a term with multi platinum selling Canadian singer ALANIS MORISSETE after stints with KINGSWAMP and North American touring with another Canadian songstress, SASS JORDAN.

SOLDIER was reactivated with a line up comprising vocalist Garry Phillips, guitarist Ian Dick, bassist Steve Barlow, keyboard player Morte and drummer Ian Astrop.

Japanese NWoBHM fanatics GORGON covered 'Sheralee' as part of their 'Back Street Killers' EP. SOLDIER made a surprising return in 2004, announcing a brand new album 'Sins Of The Warrior' through Heavy Metal Records. The line up comprised vocalist Garry Phillips, guitarist Ian Alan Dick, bass player Steve Barlow and drummer Ian Astrop. A red vinyl 7" single 'Murderous Night' also emerged and in addition the Brazilian Hellion label set 'Heavy Metal Force' as the title of a collection of archive rarities.

SOLDIER included a brand new track, entitled 'Natural High', to the 2004 'Total Metal Attack' NWoBHM era compilation album issued through Old School Records.
