Biography
Celebrated veteran vocalist PAUL RODGERS made a huge influence on many rock singers by his illustrious track record with FREE and BAD COMPANY. In particular Rodgers vocal delivery was noted for it's injection of Soul and Blues giving it a distinct but characteristically restrained edge.
Rodgers first made his mark with the groundbreaking Blues Rock act FREE. Prior to this prominence the singer, born in the northern English town of Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, had played bass before moving on to lead vocals with local band THE ROADRUNNERS, later evolving into THE WILDFLOWERS. Other notable musicians in this band were guitarist Micky Moody, subsequently of WHITESNAKE, and Bruce Thomas, later of ELVIS COSTELLO AND THE ATTRACTIONS.
In 1968 Rodgers forged FREE. The band scored an enduring classic radio hit with 'All Right Now' and released four top ten albums. Despite this success, FREE disbanded in 1973. Rodgers soon bounced back by forging BAD COMPANY in union with erstwhile MOTT THE HOOPLE guitarist Mick Ralphs. This band's first two albums went to no. 1 in the USA and earned six platinum albums until Rodgers left during 1982. Post BAD COMPANY, there were suggestions Rodgers was to form a union with ex-LYNYRD SKYNYRD personnel in the ROSSINGTON COLLINS BAND, but this did not transpire.
Paradoxically Rodgers debut solo album, October 1983's 'Cut Loose' recorded at the singer's own home in Kingston, is generally acknowledged as a weak affair lacking in great songs. Amongst these tracks, for which Rodgers recorded all instruments himself including vocals, guitars, piano, bass and drums, was a re-recording of 'Superstar Woman', an outtake from the 1974 'Bad Company' album sessions. The album peaked at a disappointing no. 135 on the US album charts.
Rodgers teamed up with erstwhile LED ZEPPELIN guitarist JIMMY PAGE to undertake live concerts on the US ARMS (Action Research into Multiple Sclerosis) benefit tour. Subsequently, Rodgers and Page moulded a further union with bassist TONY FRANKLIN and drummer Chris Slade to form THE FIRM during 1984. Seemingly a marriage made in heaven, unfortunately the Rodgers/Page partnership only produced two below par albums before splitting.
Rodgers performed the OTIS REDDING track 'Dock Of The Bay' in New York for the Atlantic Records 40th anniversary concert. In 1990 Rodgers returned to form with THE LAW, a project combining the vocalist with ex-THE WHO and FACES drummer Kenny Jones. The album release was a fine clutch of Rodgers own material alongside that of tunes donated by BRYAN ADAMS and DEF LEPPARD's Phil Collen. However, the album peaked at a lowly no. 126 on the Billboard's Pop Albums chart.
Rodgers put in a 1992 solo world tour in union with JOURNEY guitarist NEAL SCHON, backed by a rhythm section comprising bassist Todd Jensen, a scene veteran of SEQUEL, HARLOW, HARDLINE and the DAVID LEE ROTH band, plus drummer Deen Castronovo, also of HARDLINE. These shows spawned the five song EP 'The Hendrix Set', recorded at Bayfront Park in Miami on 4th July 1993.
Assembled a multitude of name guests for the 1993 'Muddy Waters Blues' album including JOURNEY guitarist NEAL SCHON, on 'Muddy Water Blues' and 'Born Under A Bad Sign', QUEEN guitarist BRIAN MAY, on 'I'm Ready', BON JOVI's RICHIE SAMBORA, on 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl', Slash of GUNS N' ROSES, on 'The Hunter', YES guitarist TREVOR RABIN, on 'Louisiana Blues' and 'She's Alright', JEFF BECK, on 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl', 'I Just Wanna Make Love To You' and 'Rollin' Stone', PINK FLOYD's DAVE GILMOUR, on 'Standing Around Crying', STRAY CATS Brian Setzer, on 'I Can't Be Satisfied' and STEVE MILLER, on 'I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man'. Also featured were bassist Pino Palladino and BONHAM's Jason Bonham on drums. The album, produced by Billy Sherwood and released through Victory Music, paid tribute to the Blues great and succeeded in putting Rodgers back into the limelight.
For his subsequent British tour Rodgers band featured drummer Jason Bonham, TOTO guitarist STEVE LUKATHER, bassist John Smithson and guitarist Ian Hatton. Rodgers performed a set at the 'Woodstock '94' Festival.
In 1997 Rodgers ventured into the realms of Progressive Rock cutting lead vocals for the Eddie Kramer produced 'Voices In The Wind' album by celebrated fretless guitar harp maestro TIM DONAHUE. His own solo album of original material, 'Now' co-produced by Eddie Kramer, arrived in June 1997.
Rodgers rejoined BAD COMPANY for a 'classic' band line up tour of North America in 1999. The 'Electric' album was recorded at Lartington Hall Studios, Barnard Castle for release in 2000. Studio musicians comprised guitarist Geoff Whitehorn, bassist Jaz Lochrie and drummer Jimmy Copley.
By 2001 the vocalist had assembled a new solo band including HEART guitarist Howard Leese for gigs opening for ALICE COOPER in Australia. Rodgers band for an April 2004 performance at the 'Brandon BBQFest' in Brandon, Florida saw the inclusion of Howard Leese once again plus former ALICE IN CHAINS man JERRY CANTRELL.
The singer, alongside DAVID GILMOUR and GARY MOORE, would be included on the special guest roll call for the 'Miller Strat Pack' concert on 24th September 2004 at London's Wembley Arena. Held in aid of the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy the concert celebrated 50 years of the famous Fender Stratocaster guitar. In December BRIAN MAY made the surprising announcement that QUEEN was set to reform, the new band being fronted by PAUL RODGERS. The musicians had jammed FREE's 'All Right Now' at the Fender 50th anniversary concert, this show apparently providing the catalyst for the new group. The first concert announced for this collaboration, simply billed QUEEN & PAUL RODGERS, would be a personal invitation by South African president Nelson Mandela to appear a '46664' AIDS fundraiser at Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate in March 2005.
Rodgers scheduled a UK tour for October, his live band including former HEART guitarist Howard Leese. The singer also arranged studio time with BRIAN MAY and ROGER TAYLOR. In 2007 Eagle Rock Entertainment issued the 'Live In Glasgow' album.
