Biography
Jazz flavoured melodic Rock outfit fronted by MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND singer Chris Thompson. This highly respected frontman's stature was such that the single 'If You Remember Me' was credited solely to Thompson. Fellow lead vocalist STEVIE LANGE, originally known as Stevie Vann but by then wife of producer Mutt Lange, is noted for her raunchy vocals on the 1979 'Limara' deodorant advert theme, 'Remember My Name', issued as a single by RCA in 1981, than any of NIGHT's Jazz-Rock outings. Although a little known obscurity, Lange also cut a duet single with BRYAN ADAMS entitled 'Prove it!'. The other well known advert Stevie has made all her own is for 'Bodyform' sanitary towels. Her pre-NIGHT session work included appearances on the eponymous 1977 GRAHAM BONNET album and the CRAWLER opus that same year.
New Zealand born bassist Billy Kristian (a.k.a. Wiremu Aata Te Rangi-amoa Karaitiana) had journeyed through many acts such as HEAD BAND, NUCLEUS, issuing two albums, and PACIFIC EARDRUM, for a further two records, before finding himself in NIGHT.
The band, signed by Richard Perry at Planet Records, started life as FILTHY McNASTY with Thompson, Kristian, Michael Walker, ex-IF and FANTASY guitarist GEOFF WHITEHORN and drummer Clive Edwards. Under this name the only recordings issued were three live numbers on the 1978 album 'Live A Week At The Bridge Club E16' alongside Lea Hart's ROLL UPS, SALT and JACKIE LYNTON.
FILTHY McNASTY evolved into NIGHT when Robbie McIntosh supplanted Whitehorn, who later joined BAD COMPANY and PROCUL HARUM. Edwards also left, later turning up in WILD HORSES, ULI JON ROTH and UFO. His replacement was Rob Guidotti. NIGHT's first album, recorded in Los Angeles and featuring a sessioning Steve Porcaro of TOTO, hosted two US hit singles, 'Hot Summer Night' at no.18 and 'If You Remember Me' at no.17. North American touring in the summer of 1979, as support to the DOOBIE BROTHERS, saw the induction of two new members, Tim Schaefer and Nicky Hopkins.
When the band folded Billy Kristian returned to New Zealand to fire up a new act branded BILLBOARD. Lange went onto an esteemed career as an in demand session singer contributing vocals to UFO's 1992 album 'High Stakes And Dangerous Men' and the WILDHEARTS album 'Earth Versus The Wildhearts'. She has also appeared on albums by STATUS QUO, GRAHAM BONNET, CRAWLER, TREVOR RABIN, RICK WAKEMAN, BRYAN ADAMS and ROGER WATERS. As STEVIE VANN she issued a self-titled solo album in 1995 on the Silvertone label.
Chris Thompson went back to MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND. Kristian sessioned for YES vocalist JON ANDERSON for his 'Animation' album of 1981 then joined STRANGE FRUIT with ex-NUCLEUS colleagues to issue a 1982 album.
