Biography

NWoBHM era Hard Rock act. Best known as being the last port of call for guitarist Adrian Smith before he was to find success with IRON MAIDEN, URCHIN also boasted guitarist Dave Colwell at one time. Colwell's connections with Smith didn't end with URCHIN as, after a time with SAMSON, the man teamed up with Smith once more for Adrian's post IRON MAIDEN project A.S.A.P. Colwell later joined BAD COMPANY. Another ex-URCHIN guitarist, Andy Barnett (a.k.a. 'Andy Marshall'), featured with Colwell in 720 and THE TORPEDOS then also joined Smith in A.S.A.P. before enrolling in FM.

Smith had actually formed URCHIN as a 16 year old and played most of the same pubs and clubs IRON MAIDEN found themselves in.

Despite lacking the same kind of press interest that IRON MAIDEN gained early on in their career, URCHIN nevertheless signed a singles deal with DJM Records. It is believed that IRON MAIDEN guitarist Dave Murray was also in the group at the time the 'She's A Roller' single was released and is reckoned to play on the 45.

Post URCHIN both Smith and Barnett joined BROADWAY BRATS, a band made up of former BLAZER BLAZER members. Barnett then joined MARSHALL FURY, an act including ex-BLAZER BLAZER and future IRON MAIDEN drummer Nicko McBrain.

Following the break up of the band, both bassist Alan Levett and drummer Barry Tyler founded the shortlived HEAD FIRST with ex-CHICKENSHACK guitarist Cliff Evans. The latter of course went on to TANK and KILLERS. Naturally, due to the IRON MAIDEN connection, both URCHIN singles have become highly collectable.

Andy Barnett resurfaced in early 2006 as a member of the resurrected NWoBHM band METAL MIRROR.
