Biography

A Sci-fi & Michael Moorcock influenced Metal band formed in 1982, with a reputation for continual gigging, MOURNBLADE released a seven track cassette album, 'Servants Of Fate', in 1984. It was recorded with a line-up of vocalist Duncan F. Mullett, guitarist Ritchie Jones, bassist Clive Baxter and drummer Nigel Tubb.

The band added ex-WHITE LIGHTNING drummer Jeff Ward in early 1985. He was joined by new keyboard player Derek Jasnoch and, during the later part of 1985, further changes were made when Baxter was to leave and was replaced by Rich Goddard, another WHITE LIGHTNING veteran. MOURNBLADE performed a massive 200 club shows in Britain during 1985, although a tour the following year found the band forced to cancel all dates when Mullett and White allegedly suffered knife wounds in a pub brawl. (a fact disputed by other members!).

MOURNBLADE would enlist ex-GAY VICARS bassist Blacken and former SILICA RICH drummer Chris 'Rudderhead' Jones in early 1986 before, in the spring, they supported ex HAWKWIND guitarist HUW LLOYD LANGTON on a British tour. Shortly after the band split.

However, the group were quick to join forces once more when they reformed in May of 1986 with yet more new addition being ex-TORA TORA drummer Magpie (real name Garry Bowler). MOURNBLADE toured Britain once more as part of the billing for the 'Magical Mystery Tour' alongside DOCTOR & THE MEDICS and ZODIAC MINDWARP. Just after these dates the band shifted musical direction away from their Space Rock, also losing Jasnoch in the process. New recruit on keyboards was Peter John Lazenby as MOURNBLADE toughened up their sound to a Punkier Metal stance.

Guitarist Richie Jones was replaced by ex JIFFYBAG member Steve James (real name Loveday) in late 1987 following a support date to THE ENID at London's Hammersmith Odeon. By late 1987 Lazenby had left to work with SINEAD O'CONNOR and THE ENID.

MOURNBLADE's new musical was portrayed on the January 1989 album 'Live Fast, Die Young' issued through G.I. Records. Further British dates followed, bolstered by a Radio One 'Friday Rock Show' session and then touring in Germany. The group promptly supported MOTÖRHEAD on their British winter tour of 1989.

In early 1990, as the band moved toward a final split, founding member Mullett departed, later to be part of one of the early THE WILDHEARTS line-ups. Blacken and Magpie would form the short-lived MUTANT with ex-OZZY OSBOURNE and GILLAN guitarist BERNIÉ TORME, whilst Stephen Loveday formed MEDICINE HAT, an act which later recruited drummer Garry Bowler.
