Biography

Fronted by IRON MAIDEN and BATTLEZONE former vocalist PAUL DIANNO. KILLERS, named after IRON MAIDEN's second album, struck a blow for meat n' potatoes traditional Metal with their release of 'Murder one' in 1992. The band formed in America with an initial line- up of Dianno, ex-CHICKENSHACK, HEAD FIRST and TANK guitarist Cliff Evans, ex-DRIVE SHE SAID guitarist Ray Ditone, RAVEN bassist John Gallagher and former CHINATOWN, PERSIAN RISK, JAGGED EDGE and PASSION drummer Steve Hopgood.

With this line-up in place, KILLERS undertook a tour of South America having previously laid down a studio session recorded in New York for a 'live' album intended solely for South American release. These tapes comprised of IRON MAIDEN and BATTLEZONE songs. Scoring a deal with RCA Records in America, by auditioning with a set made up entirely of IRON MAIDEN songs, KILLERS changed the band around by adding former IDOL RICH and PASSION guitarist Nick Burr and ex-PASSION bassist Gavin Cooper, with Gallagher having left to reform RAVEN. The subsequent album, 'Murder One' released in 1992, featured a reworking of IRON MAIDEN's 'Remember Tomorrow' and a cover of T-REX's 'Children Of The Revolution' which was lifted as a single.

KILLERS toured heavily first in Britain on a club level before departing for North America then a series of shows at large venues in Japan. Upon their return to Britain more club dates were slotted in, but by now it had become apparent that success in their homeland was a forlorn hope. At this juncture the previously recorded New York session was released unofficially worldwide much to the band's chagrin.

KILLERS signed to Newcastle upon Tyne's Bleeding Hearts Records in 1994 and released the menacingly heavy 'Menace To Society' album. The band were still dogged with problems though as Dianno found himself incarcerated in L.A.'s County Jail on drugs and firearms charges. After three months in the slammer the vocalist was eventually bailed to return to Britain to finish the album.

This interlude behind bars was to interrupt the band's progress further though as an attempt to capitalise on a live showing at the Los Angeles Foundation Forum event was scuppered when upon setting foot on American soil Dianno was handcuffed and put onto the next plane home. In October 1995 the group finally got to tour as it hitched a ride on the METAL CHURCH, VICIOUS RUMORS and ZODIAC MINDWARP package across Europe.

A live album, aptly titled 'Killers Live', was later recorded for a 1996 release. Dianno himself launched further solo albums in a more melodic vein before resurrecting his old unit BATTLEZONE for a sell out Brazilian tour in January of 1998. Erstwhile KILLERS colleagues Cooper and Burr joined him on this South American jaunt. Burr then teamed up with ex-GRIM REAPER frontman Steve Grimmett for his LIONSHEART band and a later project titled PRIDE. Another KILLERS man, drummer Peter Newdeck, would join Grimmett on another venture entitled SEVEN DEADLY SINS.

Although Evans has busied himself with TANK on tour and in the studio KILLERS was, minus Dianno, still a going concern in 2000 with rumours that PRAYING MANTIS singer Tony O'Hora may well be the new frontman. Dianno meantime had resurrected DIANNO for the successful 'Nomad' album, recorded entirely in Brazil with Brazilian musicians.

Both Dianno and Evans would act as session guests on the 2001 'Longevity' album issued by German Gothic Metal band RE VISION. During 2002 Dianno was back in the limelight, performing live with a band unit entitled PAUL DIANNO & KILLERS and promoting a no holds barred autobiography 'The Beast'.

Ex-KILLERS bassist Gavin Cooper joined LIONSHEART in December 2004, then moved on to STATETROOPER in May 2005. The bassist subsequently joined the ranks of MAGNUM singer BOB CATLEY's solo band for UK dates in April 2006. Pete Newdeck would be active with both GRIM REAPER and THE STEVE GRIMMETT BAND. The drummer also joined forces with a fresh, high profile project billed EDEN'S CURSE, an international melodic Rock outfit initiated by CRY HAVOC bassist Paul Logue with US vocalist Michael Eden and featuring plus German guitarist Thorsten Koehne, of ATTACK, DEMON DRIVE and CODE OF PERFECTION repute plus celebrated keyboard player FERDY DOERNBERG, a veteran holding association with ROYAL HUNT, ROUGH SILK, AXEL RUDI PELL and ULI JON ROTH amongst many others.
