Biography

In 1970 former CREAM drummer Ginger Baker assembled the progressive Jazz-Fusion outfit GINGER BAKER'S AIRFORCE with guitarist Denny Laine, ex ROSSETTA HIGHTOWER bassist Ric Grech, keyboard player Graham Bond, saxophonist Harold McNair and percussionist Remi Kabaka.

Atco Records issued the debut album, 'Ginger Baker's Airforce Vol. 1' in March 1970. This set, engineered by Roy Thomas Baker, was a live recording taken from the band's sold out Royal Albert Hall concert held on 15th January 1970. Guest musicians abounded, with guitarist Steve Winwood of TRAFFIC featuring on opener 'Da Da Man', 'Don't Care', 'Do What You Like' and 'Man Of Constant Sorrow'. Graham Bond provided saxophone and Jeanette Jacobs lead vocals on 'Da Da Man'. Bond also delivered lead vocals on 'Aiko Biaye'.

A further line-up of AIRFORCE had the drummer working with ex-GRIFFIN members keyboard player Kenny Craddock and bassist Colin Gibson for a studio album 'Ginger Baker's Airforce Vol.2'. Lead vocals came courtesy of Baker, Graham Bond, Diane Stewart and Catherine James. Bud Beadle and Steve Gregory contributed saxophones and Neemoi Acquaye additional percussion. German versions of the album hosted a completely different track listing, including songs unreleased elsewhere in the world including 'Caribbean Soup', 'You Wouldn't Believe It', 'You Look Like You Could Use A Rest' and a version of CREAM's 'Sunshine Of Your Love'.

Baker disbanded the project and 1971 found the sticksman relocated to Nigeria, subsequently playing with the African band SALT and noted musician FELA RANSOME-KUTI. Following the release of the 'Africa Live' album Baker took a few years sabbatical. Returning once more, Baker formed the BAKER GURVITZ ARMY.

Colin Gibson joined SNAFU in 1974. Denny Laine found greater fame with Paul McCartney's WINGS.
