Biography

Born 6th March 1946 in Cambridge, David Gilmour replaced SYD BARRETT in PINK FLOYD during 1968 and first appeared on that year's 'A Saucerful Of Secrets' album. His style of emotive playing, allied with ROGER WATERS visionary ambitions, was to place PINK FLOYD amongst the very elite of Rock greats.

Gilmour released his first solo album, simply entitled 'David Gilmour', in 1978. The studio rhythm section for this opus comprised recorded bassist Rick Wills and drummer Willie Wilson, both subsequently to join the touring personnel of PINK FLOYD. Ken Baker of UNICORN would have a hand in co-writing the track 'There's No Way Out Of Here' whilst ROY HARPER contributed to 'Short And Sweet', a song the Folk legend would re-work for his own album 'The Unknown Soldier' some two years later.

A second solo effort, 'About Face', surfaced in 1984 after PINK FLOYD had entered into a period of stasis. The album, produced by Bob Ezrin and engineered by James Guthrie and Kit Woolven, saw contributions from Palladino and Porcaro once again with two tracks, 'All Lovers Are Deranged' and 'Love On The Air', being written by PETE TOWNSHEND of THE WHO. STEVE WINWOOD donated a distinctive organ embellishment to the song 'Murder'. WHITESNAKE and DEEP PURPLE man JON LORD also aided on keyboards whilst ROY HARPER was to figure as a backing vocalist. The record fared well, with the single 'Blue Light' achieving radio play across Europe and the United States.

A live band assembled to tour the record, premiering in March of 1984 with a live TV appearance on Channel 4's 'The Tube' music programme upfront of European gigs, included BAD COMPANY guitarist MICK RALPHS, bassist Micky Feat, keyboard player Greg Dechart and URIAH HEEP drummer Chris Slade. Gilmour's April dates at London's Hammersmith Odeon, filmed for a commercial video release, once again featured ROY HARPER as guest. Nick Mason of PINK FLOYD acted as guest drummer for 'Comfortably Numb'. The group then hit North America for a lengthy stretch, gigging nationwide from May through July.

For all intents and purposes, Gilmour assumed control of PINK FLOYD from 1987 onwards, pushing the group onto ever more grandiose world tours and a succession of multi-platinum albums.

Gilmour put in a three night run of shows at the London Royal Festival Hall commencing on the 16th January 2002. The guitarist would be back in the news during 2003 after he donated the £3.6 million proceeds of his house to the homeless charity Crisis. The guitarist would be included on the special guest roll call for the 'Miller Strat Pack' concert on 24th September 2004 at London's Wembley Arena. Held in aid of the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy the concert celebrated 50 years of the famous Fender Stratocaster guitar, Gilmour playing his serial-numbered 0001 Stratocaster on the night, one of the very first of its kind made by Leo Fender in July 1954.

In September 2005 Gilmour revealed he had donated vocals to a cover version of seminal Punk classic 'Ever Fallen In Love', originally by THE BUZZCOCKS, as a tribute to the late Radio 1 DJ John Peel. Other contributors included LED ZEPPELIN's ROBERT PLANT, THE WHO's ROGER DALTREY, NEW ORDER's Peter Hook and JEFF BECK. Proceeds from the single went to Amnesty International.

Gilmour participated in a world record breaker with an act of charity later that year. In response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami disaster Canadian Rocker BRYAN ADAMS initiated the signing of a white Fender Stratocaster guitar by a host of guitar legends and Rock stars. Amongst the fellow signees would be LED ZEPPELIN's JIMMY PAGE, Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC, BRIAN MAY of QUEEN, Ritchie Blackmore of RAINBOW and DEEP PURPLE, members of DEF LEPPARD, Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards from the ROLLING STONES, ERIC CLAPTON, TONY IOMMI of BLACK SABBATH, JEFF BECK, Pete Townshend of THE WHO, Mark Knopfler, Ray Davies, Liam and Noel Gallagher of OASIS, Paul McCartney, Sting, and BRYAN ADAMS himself. Quite incredibly the instrument was auctioned in November for a staggering $1.6 million dollars, proceeds of which went to the 'Reach Out To Asia' foundation.

Gilmour announced a new solo album, co-produced by ROXY MUSIC guitarist Phil Manzanera and entitled 'On An Island', for issue in March 2006. quite spectacularly, the record hit number 1 in the UK. Live dates included shows in Germany, France, Holland, Italy plus a two night stand at London's Royal Albert Hall. During these shows Gilmour performed PINK FLOYD's 'Arnold Layne' as a tribute to the late SYD BARRETT, these versions fronted by DAVID BOWIE and Richard Wright later used for a single release.

North American gigs in April commenced at the Radio City Music Hall in New York on the 4th and 5th. The new record featured contributions from DAVID CROSBY, GRAHAM NASH, JOOLS HOLLAND and PINK FLOYD's RICK WRIGHT. His touring line-up would comprise Wright, guitarist Phil Manzanera, PINK FLOYD credited bassist Guy Pratt, PINK FLOYD live keyboard player Jon Carin and drummer Steve DiStanislao.
