Biography
Jason Bonham, son of LED ZEPPELIN's John Bonham, had first made his mark on the world of Hard Rock with membership of both AIRRACE and VIRGINIA WOLF in the mid 80s. The drummer had also contributed his clearly inherited skills to post LED ZEPPELIN projects by his late father's colleagues, such as JIMMY PAGE's 'Outrider' album and ROBERT PLANT's 'Pictures At Eleven' release.
Bonham had also appeared alongside Page, Plant and JOHN PAUL JONES playing LED ZEPPELIN material at Atlantic Records' 40th anniversary shows and was constantly at the centre of rumours that he would step into his father's shoes in a full blown LED ZEPPELIN reunion.
Nevertheless, whilst the world waited Bonham set about constructing a new act following the demise of VIRGINIA WOLF and a stint with Page in the United States promoting the 'Outrider' record.
Ex-VIRGINIA WOLF vocalist Chris Ousey was originally targeted to front Jason's new group, but initial recordings made with the singer were scrapped once Bonham had met former SCORCHER man Daniel MacMaster. The band also wound up comprising bassist / keyboardist John Smithson and ex-HONEYDRIPPERS guitarist Ian Hatton. YES guitarist TREVOR RABIN assisted with arrangements.
Gaining hugely from Jason Bonham's pedigree, the band still surprised many with the undoubted quality of the Bob Ezrin produced debut album, although, somewhat strangely, the band fared badly in Europe. Nonetheless, BONHAM scored an enormous success in the United States, debuting at Number 51 in the American charts. The momentum pushed the sales to over three quarters of a million copies and BONHAM toured in America promoting it with over 250 live shows, which included supports to BAD COMPANY.
1992, having changed management from former Atlantic employee Phil Carson to Sharon Osbourne, BONHAM's second album, 'Madhatter', was issued, produced by Tony Platt. Although a worthy follow up, the record failed to match its predecessor's sales and forced Bonham into a re-think.
Changing tack, the band adopted a new musical stance, a new vocalist in Marti Frederiksen and the revised title of MOTHERLAND. The resulting album soon faded without trace and by mid 1996 Bonham was assembling a new band, the JASON BONHAM BAND, with vocalist Chas 'Chuck' West. 2000 found Bonham as a member of HEALING SIXES.
The drummer, alongside 'band' members actor Mark Wahlberg, OZZY OSBOURNE and BLACK LABEL SOCIETY guitarist ZAKK WYLDE and DOKKEN bassist Jeff Pilson, would grace the big screen in 2001 playing the drums for the fictitious STEEL DRAGON for the movie 'Rock Star'. With a combination of musicians that strong the lure to record STEEL DRAGON material for the movie was irresistible and the subsequent 'Rock Star' soundtrack CD duly featured six STEEL DRAGON tracks with Bonham performing. Guitarist Ian Hatton subsequently worked with PAUL RODGERS, WEAPON OF PEACE and LUXX.
Jason Bonham joined THE QUIREBOYS for UK touring in 2002, the enrolled into classic Rock veterans UFO in July of 2003 for their 'You Are Here' album. Later that same year vocalist Daniel MacMaster projected a solo album entitled 'Never Ever Done' to be released through RATT vocalist STEPHEN PEARCY's Top Fuel label. With UFO's North American tour curtailed until the Autumn, Jason Bonham filled the Summer break by touring the USA as a member of AOR veterans FOREIGNER. Early 2005 found both Bonham and Chas West touring with FOREIGNER. The following April found Chas West working up tracks for a new project dubbed 3 LEGGED DOGG, a union with ex-QUIET RIOT guitarist Carlos Cavazo, ex-RAINBOW and DIO bassist Jimmy Bain, guitarist Brian Young from the DAVID LEE ROTH band and former DIO and BLACK SABBATH drummer Vinny Appice.
In January 2006 former BONHAM singer Daniel MacMaster released a new album entitled 'Rock Bonham...And The Long Road Back', a retrospective collection including four unreleased BONHAM songs. The singer would also be working on a solo album billed 'Never Ever Done' and fronting up Connecticut based band EMERALD MONKEY.
