Biography

BIG BERTHA was borne out of former THE MOVE man Ace Kefford's act ACE KEFFORD's STAND. Prior to Kefford coming onto the scene the Ball brothers Dave and Dennis had been operating as a trio titled IDEAL MILK with drummer COZY POWELL.

Powell was replaced for the 1969 single 'This World's An Apple' by Mac Poole. Although not a member of BIG BERTHA Kefford appears on the B side track 'Gravy Booby Jam'.

Ex-BLACK CAT BONES singer PETER FRENCH (later of LEAFHOUND and ATOMIC ROOSTER) also fronted the band in a formative incarnation before being replaced by former TINTERN ABBEY man Dave McTavish.

BIG BERTHA folded with guitarist Dave Ball joining PROCUL HARUM. Denny Ball would deputize for an injured Trevor Burton in THE MOVE. The Ball brothers and Powell would reunite to create BEAST in 1972, renaming themselves BEDLAM for a self titled 1973 album.

Bassist Denny Ball performed on URIAH HEEP vocalist DAVID BYRON's 'Take No Prisoners' solo album. He would also form part of a brief 1976 incarnation of URIAH HEEP before joining SHOTGUN, an act created by former URIAH HEEP man KEN HENSLEY. In recent years Ball has played the clubs with R&B band WOLFIE WITCHER & HIS BREW. By 1998 Denny had been inducted into the ranks of the legendary YARDBIRDS.

Powell of course later travelled through a variety of name acts including WHITESNAKE, RAINBOW, MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP and BLACK SABBATH as well as finding solo success.
