Biography
Initially viewed as an Indie act, Cannock's BALAAM AND THE ANGEL nevertheless blossomed into a fully-fledged Rock outfit as their career progressed from their inception during the Punk era. The debut album is very much a lightweight affair in comparison to the band's later recordings.
Having started their career in the entertainment business as a children's cabaret act in their native Motherwell, Scotland, the Morris brothers eventually moved south to Cannock. They released the aforementioned debut BALAAM AND THE ANGEL album on the Virgin label in 1986, following a brace of singles through their own Chapter 22 imprint. A valuable British support tour with THE CULT brought the band to wider public attention.
BALAAM AND THE ANGEL's second album, 'Live Free Or Die', was a much harder affair, gaining the band valuable American interest. Indeed, BALAAM AND THE ANGEL promoted the album in America by supporting both KISS and L.A. GUNS, adding ex-TWENTY FLIGHT ROCKERS guitarist Ian McKean to the band at the same time.
In 1991 Mark Morris auditioned for the vacant bass position in THE CULT, but failed to gain the job due to Ian Astbury's belief that the bassist was too much of a frontman to take such a position. Morris held his head high and opted to reorganize his band under the snappier herald of BALAAM to record the comeback mini-album 'No More Innocence' on a budget of a mere £5'000. It proved a wise move, as the harder and starker new approach was generally much preferred to previous works. A British club tour backed up the release. The group returned in 1993 with 'Prime Time'.
