Biography

ATOM SEED was created from the ashes of ZOO DOLL in 1989 by guitarist Simon James together with Chris Huxter, who later deserted to form NEW ENGLAND, vocalist Paul Cunningham and Iranian drummer Amir. New bassist Chris Dale joined in time for the band to honour a support slot to DAWN AFTER DARK. Heavily championed by influential fanzine 'The Organ', the band gigged hard and were seen by many as Britain's token Funk Rock band. In March 1990 ATOM SEED clambered aboard WOLFSBANE's UK tour as support when PRINCESS PANG pulled out at the last minute. ATOM SEED's first product, the 1990 12" vinyl single 'I Don't Want To Talk About It', released through Wolverhampton's FM revolver label, was produced by JAN CYRKA.

ATOM SEED promoted their Mark Flannery produced album 'Get In Line', released by the Heavy Metal label, by touring with the likes of ELECTRIC BOYS, SCAT OPERA and RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS. Japanese variants of 'Get In Line' added two live tracks, 'What You Say' and 'Burn'. A split occurred in the ranks when original drummer Amir quit in June 1991 to be replaced by erstwhile METAL MONKEY MACHINE skinbasher Jerry Hawkins.

With interest at a peak, a number of major labels touted for the band and, in the end, the 'Rebel' single, again produced by Mark Flannery, emerged on London Records. In late 1991 ATOM SEED toured Europe as support to MORDRED. The EP 'Dead Happy' arrived in 1992. However, the band was constantly lambasted as FAITH NO MORE copyists, a tag they never managed to shake off.

The band was subsequently dropped by London Records in mid 1993, leaving a Simon Effemy produced album 'Hard Sell Paranoia' recorded but never released. ATOM SEED split shortly after, with Dale joining first THE MACHINE and then, after a successful stint in BRUCE DICKINSON's band, turned up in Pomp outfit BALANCE OF POWER. Latterly Dale would rejoin the BRUCE DICKINSON band and make his name with the spoof underground act SACK TRICK.

Guitarist Simon James formed Psychedelic act ONIONS, releasing the album 'The Old Straight Track' in August 2006 through Stove Pony Records. Chris Dale joined the ranks of NWoBHM band TANK in December 2008.
