Biography

A genuine all star line-up created the SUN RED SUN partnership centred around guitarist Al Romano. Amongst those involved included Irish ex-OZZY OSBOURNE and GILLAN guitarist BERNIE TORMÉ (going under the pseudonym Arthur Guitar), BELLADONNA, ACE FREHLEY BAND and McCOY man Mike Sciotto, ARTENSION's John West, SAVATAGE guitarist CHRIS CAFFREY, GILLAN and MAMMOTH bassist John McCoy, ALICE IN CHAINS man Mike Starr, RAINBOW, RONDINELLI and BLACK SABBATH drummer Bobby Rondinelli and the noted BLACK SABBATH and BADLANDS vocalist RAY GILLEN.

Founded in the summer of 1991 the band original was comprised of vocalist / guitarist Al Romano, bassist John McCoy and Mike Sciotto on drums. In April,1993 Ray Gillen was added to the vocal slot. McCoy and Sciotto were replaced shortly after by bass player Mike Starr and drummer Bobby Rondinelli, who in turn were superseded themselves very briefly by Bill Cross on bass and Adam Jacobs on the drums. Former ANTHRAX frontman Joey Belladonna also contributed on the songwriting front and even guitar maestro YNGWIE MALMSTEEN adds a deft touch to the tracks 'Deadly Nightshade' and 'Big Misunderstanding'.

These were to be Gillen's last recordings, the much respected singer losing his fight against AIDS. Ray was substituted by John West in November of 1993, and CHRIS CAFFERY also came on board at that time as well as the return of Rondinelli. Some more recording and some live gigs followed with John Monte of MINDFUNK filling in on bass. The band finally called it quits in early 1994.

The debut album simply titled 'Sun Red Sun' finally came out in 1995 on the independent SRS label run by Al Romano. The album was re-issued in 1998 on the British Angel Air label with alternate cover art, a different track sequence and added three bonus tracks.

Further SUN RED SUN sessions and rehearsal tapes were issued in 1998 under the RAY GILLEN banner as '5th Anniversary Memorial Tribute'. In 1999 Al Romano released the third and final set of SUN RED SUN tracks in the form of 'Lost Tracks'. These were recordings from the same sessions with John West after Ray Gillen had passed away, Romano having re-recorded some of the original material with West singing. The album also included some of the live material that had featured John Monte on bass.

In 2000 Crook'd Records compiled a three CD box set entitled 'Sunset', featuring material from 1995's 'Sun Red Sun', 1998's '5th Anniversary Memorial Tribute' and 1999's 'Lost Tracks'.
