Biography

A Scottish back to basics Hard Rock outfit emanating from Straven, Glasgow. THE ALMIGHTY made a sizable dent on the British Rock scene due to some excellent anthemic rockers on their early albums and their willingness to prove themselves on the road by pure hard graft. Mainman RICKY WARWICK learnt his trade as live guitarist for NEW MODEL ARMY while guitarist Tantrum's previous pedigree was as bassist for ZERO ZERO. Warwick, London and Munroe were all previously in IMPACT and ROUGH CHARM prior to Warwick's stint with NEW MODEL ARMY.

Warwick's tenure with NEW MODEL ARMY ended following their 1987 'Poison Street' tour. After these dates THE ALMIGHTY was formed teaming up with former NEW MODEL ARMY road manager Tommy Tee. Within 12 gigs, during which London and Tantrum swapped instrument roles to bass and guitar respectively, the band were signed to Polydor Records following a London Marquee support slot to UNDERNEATH WHAT. No sooner had the band begun to make a name for themselves when trouble hit after the Hell's Angels objected to the similarity of the bands logo to their infamous winged skull. Negotiations and a redrawn logo solved the problem.

Promoting the October 1990 album 'Blood, Fire And Live' the band toured Britain opening for WOLFSBANE, GUN and THE RAMONES prior to touring Europe as guests to both RATT and FASTER PUSSYCAT before gaining the prestigious MOTȪRHEAD British tour guest slot. Another high profile set of dates came in March of 1991 as the band found themselves touring the UK sandwiched between headliners MEGADETH and a fledgling ALICE IN CHAINS. In the latter half of 1991 the band gained a valuable support slot on ALICE COOPER's European tour. However, in an ugly bust up, Tantrum left to form the predictably named TANTRUM and following a poorly received gigs disappeared from the circuit. Tantrum's replacement was Canadian born ex ALICE COOPER guitarist Pete Friesin (a.k.a. Pete Freezin'), who had enjoyed a brief speaking part playing himself in the hit movie 'Wayne's World' whilst in ALICE COOPER's band.

The Mark Dodson produced 'Powertrippin' saw THE ALMIGHTY adopt a more contemporary American feel, obviously influenced by the Grunge explosion. A series of British dates, including a valuable support slot to IRON MAIDEN and their own headlining tour with THE WILDHEARTS and KERBDOG as strong support, saw the band only going up in the estimation of fans and media alike. The band's hectic touring schedule began to have its revenge though when Ricky Warwick collapsed towards the end of the British tour from exhaustion.

Following a rather dismal American club tour a dispirited Polydor called it a day and dropped them. THE ALMIGHTY changed management to Sanctuary (home of IRON MAIDEN, SKIN and W.A.S.P.) and signed to Chrysalis in 1994.

The resulting album 'Crank' was graced in a sleeve design graphic courtesy of Jamie Reid, the man who designed the infamous SEX PISTOLS covers, and saw THE ALMIGHTY leaning towards a more Punk Metal attitude in keeping with the times. The 'Crank' album peaked at no. 15 in the British charts and no. 5 in Japan. Touring started to promote the album with an appearance at the Bol D'Or festival in France to 30'000 people preceded by a European support slot to PANTERA.

THE ALMIGHTY shifted further towards the Pop market with 1996's 'Just Add Life'. But shortly after the release of this record, and onstage at Nottingham's Rock City, the band announced they were splitting. The present album was immediately deleted, only to re-emerge some weeks later clad in a different sleeve design on the Raw Power label.

Warwick subsequently relocated to Dublin. Ireland and formed the Punk (SIC.) in 1996 with bassist Ciaran McGoldrick and drummer Gary Sullivan. The band found itself touring as support to KERBDOG in Britain with this new venture. An album only saw release in Japan whilst the UK was only serviced with a four track EP.

Quite bizarrely news emerged in 2000 that one of IRON MAIDEN's earliest guitarists Tony Parsons had created an IRON MAIDEN tribute band named METALWORKS 2000 including ex-ALICE COOPER and THE ALMIGHTY guitarist Pete Friezin and former JUDAS PRIEST drummer Les Binks.

Later in 2000 THE ALMIGHTY reformed for a self-titled album. The new, short haired look band comprised of Warwick, London, Stumpy and ex-ENERGETIC KRUSHER, WHATEVER, WRENCH and THE YO YOS guitarist Nick Parsons. Freezin' turned up in the same year back on the road in ALICE COOPER's band. THE ALMIGHTY supported D.A.D. in Europe during late 2000.

Tour activity in late 2001 would commence in Britain at the London Camden Underworld on November 23rd with SUNLOUNGER as openers. A fresh album launched in October of 2001, 'Psycho-Narco', would prove to be the debut of new bassist Gavin Gray. THE ALMIGHTY would reportedly be back in action in the UK for headline dates in December of 2002, supported by Chelmsford act BAD PENNIES, before which RICKY WARWICK, plugging his debut solo album, set out on the road himself in September. However, as it transpired these December band gigs would be pulled as Warwick took up a solo offer to support DEF LEPPARD in North America.

During early 2003 guitarist Nick Parsons and bass player Gav Gray teamed up with drummer Ronnie McLean in a new band entitled RUNT. Although RICKY WARWICK's 2005 schedule saw extensive touring in the USA promoting a second solo album, THE ALMIGHTY duly reformed for two benefit shows, 5th January 2006 at the Glasgow Garage and 6th January at London's Mean Fiddler, to raise money for leukaemia research, following the announcement that bassist Floyd London was currently battling acute myeloid leukaemia. The line-up for these shows comprised Ricky Warwick, Pete Friesen, Stumpy Munroe and Floyd London.

That same month it would be learned that a potential "Supergroup" union, dubbed CIRCUS DIABLO, was in the works involving Warwick and three musicians from THE CULT. The unit, conducting rehearsals and songwriting sessions at Drac Studios, owned by drummer MATT SORUM of THE CULT, VELVET REVOLVER and GUNS N' ROSES repute, involved former THE CULT bassist Billy Morrison, also handling lead vocals and THE CULT guitarist Billy Duffy.

Floyd London announced his departure from the band in November 2008, citing reasons were "both personal and political". Sadly, former band manager Tommy Tee passed away the following month. THE ALMIGHTY, including Floyd London, put on a benefit concert for Tee's widow and children on 20th June 2009 at the Cheese & Grain in Frome, Somerset.
