STEVE JONES

Biography

Guitarist Steve Jones is the notorious musical leader of the SEX PISTOLS. Following the crash of the relatively short-lived but outrageously controversial Punk band guitarist Steve Jones re-emerged, teamed up once more with fellow SEX PISTOLS drummer Paul Cook and ex-LIGHTNING RAIDERS guitarist Andy Allen in 1982 to form THE PROFESSIONALS. This liaison that achieved a modicum of success with the album 'I Didn't See It Coming'.

Having relocated to Los Angeles Jones surfaced again in 1984 as a member of CHEQUERED PAST, a 'supergroup' that also boasted former SILVERHEAD and DETECTIVE vocalist MICHAEL DES BARRES, and the ex BLONDIE rhythm section of bassist Nigel Harrison and drummer Clem Burke. The resulting album received some degree of critical acclaim, but it failed to sell and Jones set about offering his services to others although he was to re-emerge in 1987 with a solo deal struck with MCA Records and the rather tame 'Mercy' album. Touring for the album saw Gregg Gerson on drums.

In his post SEX PISTOLS career the guitarist has turned up on records by such diverse artists as BANANARAMA, JOAN JETT and also contributed to MEGADETH's version of the SEX PISTOLS classic 'Anarchy In The UK'.

In 1988 an alliance between Jones and DURAN DURAN guitarist ANDY TAYLOR produced 3 songs for the movie 'American Anthem'. Other projects included the IGGY POP albums 'Blah, Blah, Blah' and 'Instinct' as well as co- producing and co-writing Andy Taylor's solo album 'Thunder'.

gave it another solo shot in 1989 with his 'Fire And Gasoline' opus, co produced by Mark Dearnley and Ian Astbury of THE CULT. The record featured Axl Rose of GUNS N' ROSES on the track 'I Did U No Wrong' (formerly a SEX PISTOLS B-side to 'God Save The Queen'), lyrics by MÖTLEY CRÜE's Nikki Sixx for 'We're Not Saints' and is overall a commendable Hard Rock album. Bass came from former KILLERWATT man Terry Nails. Incidentally, the CD of the album has a version of DAVID BOWIE's 'Suffragette City'.

The band toured America supporting THE CULT and for these shows Jones retained the services of Nails and added guitarists Kirk Hellie and SUCKERPUNCH man Mike Dimkitch with drummer Pete Kelly. Nails later forged BONE ANGELS. Dimkitch later formed WOOL and MY FAVOURITE MARTIAN. By 1999 he was rhythm guitarist for THE CULT. Hellie would later figure in acts DEATH LOOP GENERAYTOR and PINK NOISE TEST.

Jones guested on CYCO MIKO's 1995 album 'Lost My Brain! (Once Again)'. In a year that bore witness to a spate of high profile reformations Steve Jones was part of the 1996 SEX PISTOLS reunion.

The guitarist's first news of 2004 would be session guitar spots on THE AUTOMATICS album 'Forty Virgins In The Afterlife', featuring on the tracks 'Peace On Earth' and 'Trash'. On the live front, Jones would be a familiar guest at Californian CAMP FREDDY gigs and turned up at a 12th September RAMONES 30th anniversary concert, performing 'Judy Is a Punk', 'Commando' and 'Blitzkrieg Bop' with HENRY ROLLINS. He would also be active on the airwaves, presenting his own radio show in Los Angeles 'Jonesey's Jukebox'.

Jones marked a return in 2005, allied with FLIPP on their rendition of 'Personality Crisis' to the NEW YORK DOLLS tribute album 'Jetboys Of Babylon'.
