Biography
Skegness born vocalist Graham Bonnet, in his time, has fronted some of the World's greatest Rock bands including high profile stints with RAINBOW, MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP, IMPELLITERRI and ALCATRAZZ. The singer has also achieved a fair amount of solo success. Indeed, the man had his first hit with Pop band THE MARBLES in 1968, with the single 'Only One Woman' (Polydor 56 272) reaching Number 5 in the British charts. The band were unable to follow it up with another smash (their next single only reached Number 28), so Bonnet quit to earn money adding his vocal power in the lucrative world of commercials. Graham did, however, venture back into the Rock world thanks to the odd single release in the early 70s, culminating in an LP, 'Graham Bonnet', issued in 1977 with which he scored a gold album with in Australia. This outing notably featured the pre-NIGHT session singer STEVIE LANGE on backing vocals.
Chosen by RITCHIE BLACKMORE to replace Ronnie James Dio in the ranks of RAINBOW, being given the job after just one through of 'Mistreated', he immediately cut the 'Down To Earth' album, Bonnet's arrival in the band coincided with a richly productive commercial spell. RAINBOW gained two huge hit singles in 1980 with 'Since You Been Gone' and 'All Night Long'. Bonnet also appeared with the group headlining the inaugural 'Monsters Of Rock' festival at Castle Donington.
Bonnet's time with RAINBOW was, however, reasonably brief, leaving the group (in a dispute allegedly regarding his taste in stage clothes and the length of his hair!) to take up the reigns of his solo career, releasing the 'Line Up' album in 1981, handled by producer John Eden. For the recording of 'Line Up', Graham assembled such Rock statesmen as DEEP PURPLE and WHITESNAKE keyboard player JON LORD, WHITESNAKE and RAINBOW drummer COZY POWELL, WHITESNAKE guitarist MICKY MOODY on guitar and bassist Gary Twigg.
Tempted by an offer from ex-UFO German guitarist Michael Schenker, Bonnet joined the MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP for the impressive 'Assault Attack' album. Unfortunately a drunken onstage incident in Sheffield, where Bonnet 'treated' the audience to a view of his privates, led to a parting of ways with Schenker on the eve of a prestigious appearance at the Reading Festival in rather bizarre circumstances. Gary Barden, who Bonnet had replaced, surprised everyone by taking over at the eleventh hour in order that MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP could play the gig.
Bonnet was to re-emerge in Los Angeles in ALCATRAZZ, a band that merged his talents with those of ex-NEW ENGLAND men Gary Shea on bass and Jimmy Waldo on keyboards, former ALICE COOPER drummer Jan Uvena and, significantly, former STEELER Swedish guitar maestro YNGWIE MALMSTEEN. This outfit garnered heavy media attention and major Japanese sales with the album's 'No Parole From Rock n' Roll' in 1983, 'Live Sentence', 'Disturbing The Peace' with new guitarist STEVE VAI and 'Dangerous Games' with DANNY JOHNSON on guitar. ALCATRAZZ disbanded in 1987.
Bonnet's post ALCATRAZZ projects have included BLACKTHORNE -working with ex-BALANCE guitarist Bob Kulick, backing vocals for Danish Heavy Metal band PRETTY MAID's 'Future World' opus and numerous session works for FORCEFIELD, appearing on the records 'To Oz And Back' and 'Let The wild Run Free'. In 1988 the singer yeamed up with another hot shot guitarist, IMPELLITERRI, for the album 'Stand In Line'.
In 1997 the man returned with 'Underground', a brand new solo effort. The record featured an all star cast including ex THE FIRM and BLUE MURDER bassist TONY FRANKLIN, his fellow four-stringer Todd Jenson, former AXIS and ALCATRAZZ guitarist DANNY JOHNSON, the CINDERELLA, HARLOW and SHADOWKING credited drummer Kevin Valentine and HARLOW keyboard player Pat Regan.
His star was re-ascending in Japan now and the guest list for 1999's 'The Day I Went Mad' amply illustrates this. As well as retaining the services of Franklin and Valentine the record boasts ex-GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash, DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell, KISS and UNION man Bruce Kulick and noted guitar virtuoso Mario Parga. Two members of Bonnet's live act FIREFLY also contribute in guitarist John Thomas and keyboard player Michael Alemania.
Bonnet contributed lead vocals to Japanese Metal band ANTHEM's 2000 release 'Heavy Metal Anthem'. The record, assembled by the ANTHEM and LOUDNESS credited bassist Nauto Shibata, saw reworks of classic ANTHEM tracks plus three Bonnet era RAINBOW cuts and a rework of 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?' from Bonnet's debut album. The singer resumed activity with IMPELLITERRI in 2000 for the 'System X' album. Meanwhile, his 1999 Japanese album would see a September 2001 UK release from Escape Music.
Bonnet would assemble an all star cast for a series of British club dates to close 2001. Included would be the esteemed veteran keyboard player DON AIREY, bassist Chris Childs and drummer Harry James of THUNDER and THE CAGE, MOLLO/MARTIN and VOODOO HILL guitarist Dario Mollo.
GRAHAM BONNET was to put on a celebratory show at Paladino's, Tarzana, California in February of 2003 including material from RAINBOW, ALCATRAZZ and the MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP. Howie Simon was handle guitar for the show but it would be cancelled at short notice due to the singer suffering from a sinus infection. In early 2004 Bonnet joined Italian guitarist Dario Mollo's new project ELEKTRIC ZOO, touring Europe during April. Maintaining the Italian connection, the singer also participated in guitar virtuoso Matteo Filippini's project, MOONSTONE, featuring on the track 'Not Dead Yet'.
A one off, 24th September solo show at Tarzana Paladino's found Bonnet backed by guitarist Howie Simons and drummer Glen Sobel from JEFF SCOTT SOTO's band, bassist Tim Luce and guitarist / keyboard player John Thomas. The singer announced tour dates extending into Russia, Lithuania and Finland for February of 2005. Accompanying Bonnet would be an all new cast of players in the HANOI ROCKS credited keyboard player Pate Flintstone and drummer Kari "Lacu" Lahtinen, former MICHAEL MONROE band guitarists Daffy and Lamppari with Jay Lewis of PRINCESS PANG and SKIN & BONES repute on bass.
In 2006 Bonnet guested as lead vocalist on THE TAZ TAYLOR BAND album ''Welcome To America'. On May 26th the singer guested onstage, vocalising songs 'Love's No Friend' and 'Lost In Hollywood', with ULI JON ROTH's Sky Academy Concert at the UCLA Ralph Freud Theater in California. Finnish solo headline dates were scheduled for August.
