Biography
Essentially founded as a vehicle for UFO lynchpins vocalist Phil Mogg and bassist PETE WAY to pursue music following the collapse (due to guitarist Michael Schenker throwing in the towel yet again) of UFO's massively successful 1995 American tour. It is widely reported that the inaugural MOGG/WAY album was fully intended to be another incarnation of UFO. However, unable to use the name UFO due to contractual reasons Mogg and Way opted to use their surnames and stride forward. Mogg had remained since the late sixties as the central lynchpin of UFO. Way, another UFO founder member, had remained steadfast too until 1982 when he opted out journeying through FASTWAY, OZZY OSBOURNE's band and the anarchic WAYSTED. The two reunited in a revitalized UFO during the late 80's.
The duo were offered the services of young American guitarist GEORGE BELLAS for the album. Bellas was to issue a solo album 'Turn Of The Millennium' the same year the MOGG/WAY debut emerged.
The group was rounded out by drummer Aynsley Dunbar, whose reputation harks back to band's such as JETHRO TULL, RETALIATION, OZZY OSBOURNE, JEFFERSON STARSHIP and the formative years of JOURNEY. The resulting album featured a re-working of UFO's 'Mother Mary'. Having kissed and made up with Michael Schenker once more UFO would reform once more in late 1997 with Simon Wright on drums and undertake exhaustive touring throughout Europe well into early 1998.
MOGG/WAY reunited once more for a second album 'Chocolate Box' this time with new guitarist JEFF KOLLMAN of EDWINDARE and THE TRUTH. Joining Mogg and Way were UFO cohorts Paul Raymond and Simon Wright. Additional guitar and keyboards came from Luis Moldonado.
UFO with Schenker reunited in 1999, with Aynsley Dunbar once again on drums, but Mogg also found time to busy himself on a projected solo album in cahoots with Kollman. Meantime Way issued his first purely solo album 'Amphetamine' whilst Kollman made his presence felt with the technically accomplished Jazz Rock act COSMOSQUAD alongside the ex-YNGWIE MALMSTEEN rhythm section of bassist Barry Sparks and drummer Shane Gaalas.
By the time UFO's 2000 touring line up was announced it emerged that Dunbar was out but MOGG/WAY man Moldonado was in. Phil Mogg also spent time in 2000 working on his projected solo album working with Kollman. JEFF KOLLMAN also cut tracks for ex ARTENSION and BADLANDS vocalist JOHN WEST's solo album 'Permanent Marks' and issued his own solo album 'Shedding Skin' in 2000.
Former guitarist George Bellas re-emerged as part of the RING OF FIRE project band in 2001. By July of 2002 Phil Mogg's solo album had been given the title of 'Dancing With St. Peter' and a revised band title of $IGN OF 4. This would subsequently be switched to STONETOWNE. Whilst Mogg, Way and Dunbar busied themselves cutting the UFO album 'Sharks' Kollman was revealed to be collaborating with another esteemed classic Rock vocalist GLENN HUGHES for a fresh band venture, later revealed as a "Pop" band dubbed SHAPE 68.
With regular UFO bassist PETE WAY experiencing visa difficulties, Jeff Kollman took over bass duties for UFO's July 2005 US tour dates. In late 2005 Way struck up another band project dubbed DAMAGE CONTROL, this being an alliance with former MAGNUM, NOTORIOUS and LIFE guitarist ROBIN GEORGE and drummer Chris Slade, the distinctive bald headed veteran also holding a prior tradition with AC/DC, URIAH HEEP, ASIA, MANFRED MANN, 100 PROOF and THE FIRM.
