Biography
Hard Rock NWoBHM band from the Manchester area. Featuring ex-STREETFIGHTER drummer Gary Taylor, BUFFALO had contributed 'Battletorn Heroes' to the compilation album 'New Electric Warriors' before releasing it as their first single through Heavy Metal Records.
BUFFALO started life as TANGLEFOOT in 1977 prior to adopting the BUFFALO title. Original line-up was vocalist Revor Starkie, guitarists Mick Priestley and Rich Brent, bassist Andy Thompson and drummer Dave Dugdale.
With this guize BUFFALO toured supporting IAN GILLAN BAND and STRIFE among others. The line up altered in 1979 with Brent and Starkie replaced by Paul Kitchen and John Ralphs for recording of the 'Battle Torn Heroes' single. In 1980 the band lost Dugdale bringing in ex-STREETFIGHTER drummer Paul Milek. The bass position also saw changes with Tom Reid coming in for a few months prior to Jez Brent taking the role. In a period of flux further new faces were guitarist Richard Boyd and drummer Chris Thompson.
BUFFALO secured a position on the British 'New Electric Warriors' tour but had to make do without their vocalist as Ralphs had a prison sentance to serve! BUFFALO roped in Mick Bailey who supplanted Boyd and also supplied lead vocals. Thompson failed to make the tour also, his position being taken by Pete West. Bassist Tom Reid also re-joined the band for UK gigs with Y&T until he was out again in favour of Gary Short. Further dates saw BUFFALO supporting DEMON.
1983's BUFFALO consisted of mainstay Priestley, Bailey, Short and another erstwhile STREETFIGHTER member drummer Gary Taylor. STREETFIGHTER had folded after guitarist JOHN SYKES went onto TYGERS OF PAN TANG, THIN LIZZY, BLUE MURDER and WHITESNAKE and bassist Merv Goldsworthy hooked up with SAMSON, DIAMOND HEAD and FM.
BUFFALO were offered a deal with French label Carrerre, also home of SAXON and DEMON, and demoed the old SPENCER DAVIS GROUP tune 'Gimme Some Lovin' for the label. Everything fell through though when a Carrerre act NUTZ recorded the same song.
Having left BUFFALO Gary Taylor later joined TANK before journeying to America to forge SHOTGUN RATIONALE. Bailey quit to join EGYPT and SWEET SIN and BUFFALO ground to a halt in 1984.
The story was far from over though as BUFFALO resurfaced in 1992. Priestley assembled a fresh look band of ex-BAD TO THE BONE vocalist / guitarist Chris Webber, ex OXYM bassist Nigel Talbot and drummer Matt Tymon. This incarnation recorded a track for the Vivid Records compilation 'Mind Over Metal'.
BUFFALO did not stay stable for long. In came a new rhythm section of bassist Steve Yates and drummer Phil Earnshaw. The 1998 roster included Webber, Priestley, bassist Roger Cook and drummer Bob Hargreaves. Lately former X WILD vocalist Frank Knight has been added.
